What a GREAT trip! I primarily used my Butler Map suggestions which really panned out. If we saw a 2-track leading off the road with no gates or private signs we'd head down it to see what happened. Some were spectacular while other were a quick u-turn and back on our way.
Had one small mishap on a concrete water crossing where the S10 took a nap. I must have been getting a little too confident and, BAM, we went down. Was probably doing less than 5mph so it was more shocking than sore. My wife's such a trooper. She just jumped back on and was ready to hit the next one. Now, when we came across a HUGE one on James River road south of Mason she wasn't all that keen on crossing that one but when I insisted she was glad we did it. About 15 feet from the other side a water moccasin swam about 10 feet from our front tire. She told me I better not drop it now and I was glad he stayed away from my feet that were down in the water!
A couple of BMW's saw the crossing and had turned around to double back but when they saw us head across they eventually decided to follow. One guy who was solo made it but the other, also with a passenger, dropped it about 3 times, but eventually got through. A couple of loaded dual-sports turned around.
We covered just over a 1000 miles over the weekend and almost none were boring! Below is a link to our pics
