Installing my Heated grips and crash bars. I removed the lower side panel and the four screws from the top panel. What is thr trick with the two black fitting inside, underneath the headlights? Before I start prying with a screw driver and screw up a simple fitting, thought I would ask the experts. Is this one of those automotive type nylon rivet things?

Not sure of exactly what fasteners you're referring to, but they sound like the plastic rivets Yamaha likes to use. There is a small button in the center - push this in with a small screwdriver, punch, or allen wrench and the fastener will relax. Then you can then remove the entire fastener.

If not damaged, they can be reused. Pull the center pin out so that the button is proud, reinsert into hole, then push button flush.

It's all very clear once you have the bugger in your hand.

It is as Mark said. To add to this, use a flashlight to see the center of the pin and push gently. Also they like to fly out and land in places that make finding them a two beer job to find. Sometimes lost forever. lol
Once you push the pin it is very easy to remove them.

Yamaha uses two types. With one, you push a center button, the other has a Phillips head screw in the center and you turn it a quarter turn where it backs out slightly and releases the fastener. In my experience, the Phillips type if more fussy as the entire fastener will attempt to turn when you turn the center - it helps to keep a fingernail against the edge of the fastener so that the center can turn with respect to the fastener and back out.

Center button push type:

Quarter turn type:

I haven't seen one like Rem shows on a Yamaha - this looks like one which you pull out the center to release.

Yes be careful, they have a infuriating way of vanishing into the never to be found land.
Nice saying MarkJenn "stand up proud". Funny and true
