Markething.....

Yamaha almost doing nothing to promote this bike, when BMW does a lot for the GS serie.

Also the Gs serie is the "flag ship" of the bike adv bike for half a century, so give it some time!

Mine turns 4 next week and since new she went to the doctor for the harness recall, standard services and 5 sets of replacement tyres. I have never been let down and apart from all the goodies bolted on, never spent a cent on repairs.
Hopefully this post hasnt jinxed me.

No great advertising.

Yamaha released it with a crappy little clip that really did not tell the consumers much of anything, still not much more of it to date.

It is not rocket science, they need a peppy ad, they need to forget about the R1, hell most people do not even know wtf that is anyhow and they need to do like BMW, hand out a few of these not to the useless assed magazines, but to adventurers, people who are out making their mark on the world.

The single smartest thing BMW did was back the two rich guys on their round the world quest, in long way around and down. Those shows alone give BMW a marketable edge and everyone else has to dethrone them and make their mark, yami at this point merely exists.

Its cool with me. I enjoy turning heads everywear i go and im in bike country (Floirda). I 've seen one S10 and that was driving to Savannah, GA and other than that one more i saw was hanging out in a motorcycle dealership collecting dust. I only bought mine and ever really saw the S10's due to my TTR-250 needing parts on the regular and every time i went to my local dealership (Stationed in Oklahoma city at the time) i would walk by and touch the Blue 2012 Super Yammi that would later become mine. Oh and the big kicker was that someone returned that new Blue S10 after 253 miles and put it on consignment for 11 stacks even fully loaded where i rescued her from neglect. ::015::

My region must be different. Very common for me to see at least one Tenere on every ride of any length. Even pulled into a restaurant one time to find another one farkled almost exactly like my wife's bike. Would have been a mirror effect if we parked next to it. I don't feel like they are all that rare around here.

That's been my experience as well. It's a rare ride in the N GA mountains that I don't see at least one Tenere if not more out riding. But there is a core group of perhaps around a dozen S10 riders as well as the ones that travel to ride in the area.

The vast overwhelming population of motorcycle owners buy a bike then put less than 1000 miles a year on it.
:( :(

I can't recall ever seeing another Tenere on the road unless I started out riding with them. :( :( :( Maybe I'm blind?

Folks always ask how I like the BMW. I just smile to myself.

Might be a good day for a ride!

People used to ask me that when I was on my Honda ST-1100, with Honda stickers all over it. Aren't you tempted to respond with "I don't know, I don't own one" and watch the ensuing confusion? ;D

I almost gave myself whiplash when I saw another '12 blue (fastest) S10 in our area, I don't see them very often here either.
Perhaps these bikes naturally congregate where the riding is very very good? ::001::

It's a conspiracy by the magazines. How often do you see the S10 included in an adventure bike shootout and how often do see the BMW GS NOT included. The last one I read, they left the S10 in T mode then complained about the power. Low publicity - low sales. QED! Mind you, the bizarre original internet purchase only Yamaha launch certainly did sales no favours and that's a hard obstacle to come back from.
Not sure I agree... I have seen the S10 in almost all the magazines in comparison tests and most all had good things to say about it. It did not come our #1 but they all praised the street ability, comfort, and decent off road ability. The warts the note continue to be lowest HP in the group, more weight than most and the fact that you can't turn off the ABS without "fooling" the computer. BUT ... none have panned it or really dumped on it. Most have said it it most thing really well and one said it was the pick for the best of both worlds i.e. street and off road. Why they don't seem to be selling is a mystery. Although maybe some colors other than black and gray might help :D I do like the white 2013's I have seen!! ::008:: And the 26K valve adjustment interval is really sweet!!

In addition was thinking it might be similar to the Gold Wing situation and why no other manufacturers have succeeded in knocking the Wing off the throne as the King of the Luxo Touring bikes. Many others have tried and have put up bikes that are arguably better in many aspects than the Wing. But the Wing still remains on top and I suspect many want the "original". Those who can't afford a Wing may opt for something else but I suspect the masses want the original. I am NOT suggesting I agree but just suggesting that may be part of why the GS is still sort of the "original" and for many that is what they want to own. Just a theory. I do hope the Super Tenere begins to sell resulting in strong after market support.

I think another issue is with Japanese bikes many models come and go and when the "go" so does the aftermarket. The GS has been around for a long time. In addition when you bring a 10 year old GS in for service the BMW dealer will gladly work on it. Many Japanese brands will not work on older bikes. I experienced that when I owned my 1996 Yamaha Royal Star which was one of the best most dependable bikes I have ever owned. Most dealers thought it was a Road Star and then had to explain it was a liquid cooled v-4.

Just my $.02 and YMMV ::013::

Interesting on not working on older Japanese bikes.

I wonder if the Tenere would have done better under the Star label?

Maybe it will jsut take time, I guess we will see.

FWIW push and hold TC button(on my '14) and TC turns off. I checked and to my surprise the owners manual was right and the magazine was wrong.

You've always been able to turn TC off, it's the ABS that doesn't switch off. Even the centre stand work around doesn't work on all variations.

Yes ... will just have to see if Yamaha does well enough in sales to continue the support. Heck I hope they sell a ton and keep the competition up. Ironically Honda has pretty much passed on the Adventure bike market. Suzuki is coming back with he 1000 Strom and the buzz on what Kawasaki will do is beginning. The KLR is a great bike but in a totally different class. You gotta love the excitement with the industry is heating up.
