Hello,

I'm Chris. I'm racking my brain trying to make a decision. I have a 2009 Concours that is a great bike, but I've pretty much decided that I want to trade for a Super Ten.

I did 500 miles on a 2015 S10 last summer and fell in love.

I keep going back and forth on one decision;

Do I pick up a new 2013 for $8500 or get a 2014 base model for about $12k-ish?

Money is a factor for me.

I've read the comparisons here and most seem to be from when 2014's were just coming out.

I've also read up and know about the clutch basket, no cruise, need to reflash ECU, led turns and tail, new head/rigns, variatons to TC and riding modes, etc.

What are folks' thoughts now?

Thanks.

I have a twelve which I am perfectly happy with. The Stock suspension is decent so once you adjust it, you get way more satisfaction.
Sounds like the ES is the way to go, I would definatly go with that if you can afford it. Always get a left over money as that money saved is more money touring.

I am not into farkles, I think they are largely nonsense, with the exception of crash protection, that is a must.

I have a 13 that i modded pretty good and i love it , The 14 has some better features but for $3,500 more i think you could make the 13 a better bike .

Welcome to the forum Chris. I have a '12 with just under 100k on it. Yes, I did the clutch swap, but only after 60k miles or more. It was getting vibey and nothing I tried helped that. You don't need to do this right off the bat. Re-flash of the ECU - I have not done this. Personally, it depends on what kind of rider you are. If you twist the throttle a lot, big movements and like to use all of what the bike offers every ride, plan on the ECU re-flash. You can get that done at a reasonable price from one of the forum members that works really well with his customers to get them what features they want/use/need. However, if you tend to ride steady throttle and don't use big twists all the time, forget about the re-flash, it's not necessary and you won't notice much if you did it. (I'll probably take some heat for that comment from those that love the re-flash, but they are almost universally big throttle movement types)

How are you going to use the bike? Cruise is nice for longer trips and touring. But it's not necessarily a must. We somehow managed to ride bikes w/o it for all these years, eh? Do you want/need luggage? Different wind screen? Try to factor these things into your costs. Unlike the Connie, the Super Ten doesn't come with bags.

Factor in luggage and any other items you will want too. Some dealers will throw in luggage or a store credit. Get the dealer to throw in the four year YES Yamaha extended warranty too. It can be had for ~$400, so don't let them BS you about a retail cost of $900+. Haggle it into the purchase at no extra cost to you. It's good to have, though most don't need it. I did, and it saved me several thousand dollars when the cam chain tensioner failed, again at much higher mileage. Most failures come after 50k and preventative replacement at the first or second valve check is prudent.

Hi Chris, Welcome to the forum. I bought a leftover 2013 last year and really enjoy the bike. At $8500 it's a lot of bike at an incredible price. I paid $10500 for mine with all the Yamaha accessories, panniers, skid plate, crash bars, tall windshield and the YES warranty. In hindsight, I should have just bought the bike and then purchased aftermarket accessories. The aftermarket stuff is usually better and costs about the same. The Yamaha panniers are just OK, but they are plastic and the locks can be a problem. The rest of the Yamaha accessories have been replaced and are now hanging up in my garage. Sounds like money may be an issue, so buy the 2013 and get the dealer to include the YES warranty. Then buy your accessories when you can afford them. Look through this forum for the threads on the air screw, throttle body synchronization and 02 settings. These help the low speed running tremendously. Maybe your dealer could do this before you pick the bike up. You may decide that you don't need a reflash. I have not had mine flashed and I may never do it. The bike has plenty of power to get me in trouble as is. Good luck with your decision.

Hello and welcome.

My wife and I still own both a '12 and a '15 Tenere. I routinely ride both. The '12 is a wonderful bike. The '15 is more refined and a noticeable improvement in many areas. That said, I always enjoy swinging a leg over the '12 and never feel like I'm sacrificing something when riding it. It's still as much fun as it ever has been.

The '12 is my wife's bike. She knows about the cruise control, and the overall smoother operation of the '15. Even knowing that, she won't let me replace her bike with a '14+ unless it has the right color. She is perfectly willing to wait for the '17 colors because she still loves her '12 and it has been such a great bike.

If money is a primary consideration, you really can't go wrong with a first generation Tenere.

I had to make the same decision about a year ago. Pricing almost the same.
Went with the 13 and glad I did. The 14's were nice but couldn't justify $4000 for cruise control and a few extra's.
I'm very happy with it. Maybe get a newer bike some day but the 13 is doing just fine and I still have beer money!

Welcome aboard Chris.

I had a 12 and have a non-ES 14. If absolute bottom dollar is the biggest factor, then we've had used 12s sell for around $7000, and of course, $8500 for a new one can't be beat. At the same time, we've had some like-new pre-owned 14s at about $10k. After doing the usual upgrades on the 12 and factoring in resale, my own thought is that it's a wash price-wise and the 14 is a bit nicer bike.

There is a '12 for sale on the advrider forum with 38k miles in pristine condition selling for $6k. I would buy that in a heartbeat if i didnt already own one.

Thanks. Trying to find it. No luck as of yet.

no worries on high mileage?
:D No worries on LOW mileage. We have several Super Tenere owners over 100k or close to it on this board.

It would be good to find out if the 26k mile valve check/adjustment was done, and if the CCT, (cam chain tensioner), was replaced with the updated version. There are two recalls for the '12 bikes, one for headlight wiring harness, (the original was too light and caused some headlight connectors to melt, causing the light to cease function), and one for the O-ring gasket at the fuel pump, (inspection/replace - a few gaskets got twisted during installation and leaked a little fuel). Neither are a big deal and you can run the VIN to check if they were done Here: https://vinrcl.safercar.gov/vin/

Where can I find these used deals?
Watch CycleTrader and Craigslist. You can also do fly&drives, have a local owner from the forum check out a bike, or use a servie like www.haulbikes.com. btw - Haulbikes has a $450 winter special going on.

thx. I primarily meant on this forum and advrider. Couldn't see a for sale section. maybe just too new
Generally, you have to be logged in to see the for sale areas of most forums. On this forum, click on the forum tab at the top of the page, then scroll down to "For Sale" under the Marketplace tab.

On ADV, click on the forum tab and scroll down to "Flea Market" to find bikes for sale.
