Hi all,

Joined recently as was sure I was gonna buy an ST but now the deal has fallen through on my current bike and it's, well, made me think it's fate!
I've never ridden an ST and getting a demo is not possible so was gonna buy on gut feeling but now not so sure...I've had a lots of bikes over the years and mainly silly fast, fun ones. But I've had some not so silly fast ones too like vstrom 1000, ktm 950 adv, tdm 900, triumph tigers, 955 and 1050.....is the ST in the same ballpark as I can't get the 95 hp and nearly 600lb out of my head?!?

I'm currently riding a bmw s1000r but combined with the less than perfect roads where I live, it's aggravating my reconstructed shoulder...but boy is it fun to ride lol.

Your thoughts would be appreciated, Chris ::003::

If you're looking for speed alone, I'd say you're better off with the S1k. This bike is by no means as fast as the current super bike leaders, but it does provide you with a lot of usable power. I will keep it short, as I'm sure my cohorts will give you more responses; this bike is a work horse of a motor, low end power in abundance and despite what the "critics" say, the engine has a lot of character of it's own.

I forget this bike weighs 600+ pounds when getting on the interstate with the traction control light flashing as the front wheel is coming off the ground. But I appreciate it for what it is: an adventure bike. All day comfort, off road capability, enough power to keep you entertained with the reliability of a Swiss watch.

Damn well said, SHR. And welcome to the Forum, Chr1s. Can't tell you what's right for you, but I couldn't imagine any other bike for the purpose for which it was designed. I like it more every time I ride it.

Thanks for the welcome folks.

What I was looking, for I guess, was for more of a comparison between the adv style bikes I've previously owned and the ST, from folk that have tried them too.

maybe try some travelling to find a dealer who will give you a test ride, although it is really not necessary based on what you have already ridden.....

In a word!
Dependability...
I have owned many bikes over the years including the 1050 Tiger not the same bike at all. But flat out 100% hassle free mechanics 20+k valve adjustment and fun to ride and you won't crack the frame when off road like I have seen folks do on the 1050.
Oh! and no chain.. ;D

Sod it...I think I'm just gonna go for it...the one I'm looking at buying is in another province and is a new, left over 2013 model. It's 3.5k cheaper than a '14....I'd be silly to walk away from that right ;D

Congrats on the new bike. I've been riding over 40 years on every kid of bike you can think of and this is the most fun I've had .

Welcome and congrats on the new '13!

Many options for skid plates...search the forum and they'll be threads galore.

Welcome and congratulations. The white is really stunning and a lot of people here bought on the PreDelivery Plan, putting down money before the bike ever arrived in North America.

In answer to what to expect - The Tenere is ergonomically very much like the BMS 1150 & 1200 GS. It's also a bit like the next evolution of the 1000VStrom.

When you get it, realize that this bike for some reason doesn't loosen up and come into itself till about 1500 miles. You'll want to flatten the seat and there are several threads about ways to put some spacers under it.

As for skid plates, the biggest thing is to not buy Yamaha's. Again, there are numerous threads about people's experience with different styles.

The next farkles to lighten your wallet will probably be luggage. Or aux lights. Or power distribution blocks. Or GPS & tunes. Or . . .

:D

Congrats on your purchase. For what its worth, I own a 2013 s1000rr, and have only owned my st for almost a month. I already have more miles on the st...... The bmw is a track weapon (for me) and the st is an everything weapon. Its versatility easily makes up for it 80+ hp difference, IMHO . Just got back from riding to Las Vegas and was grinning from ear to ear when I got to Vegas and when I got home in AZ.

Enjoy it! You made a great choice!

IIRC the Altrider skid plate is compatible with the factory bars. I currently have the GIVI bars and Altrider plate, so I know that combo works too.

Congrats on your purchase! I hope your Super Ten gives you many miles of smiles, as mine and so many others already have.

Cheers,

Thanks for all the welcomes and opinions, folks. Only about 2 or 3 more weeks and I'll be on the 10.. Can't wait 8)
Don't see many of them about...I've seen none where I live. The GS sells really well here and it's a cracking bike too for the roads on the island.

Chr1s Congrats on the new bike, you will not be disappointed. I posted a similar thread prior to buying my S10. Having owned Tigers and Speed Triples I too was a bit concerned about the go. Bought one and I love it. The numbers are misleading, the bike goes just fine.

Thanks Donk. My 2005 speed triple 1050 was one of my favs...awesome bike for everyday fun....not a patch on the s1000r I currently have though...that thing should be locked up with meds, it's crazy.
