You did that in 6000 miles?

You are the man!

I thought I tortured the rear tire. I can toast a K60 in about 8-9000 miles. Not disappointed either, getting less than others. I always figured my stop n go daily commute was the culprit. Not complete hooligan style, but definitely with purpose.

Wow, what do you do with "normal" tires? :)

Actually that's a photo from the 5,895 mile mark. Don't judge the tire harshly. I ride like an immature punk when I get off pavement (and sometimes on pavement). I use the bike as my mental therapy, and apparently I need a lot of therapy. Guess I should order a new rear tire.

On the other end of the bike the front K60 has over 14,000 miles and is still going strong. No front has ever come close to that for me.

I can definitely vouch that Dirt_dad likes to spin out his tires on the gravel. I followed him about a month ago, and I saw a few rooster tails! ;D :D

Anyone tried this yet? Looks like an interesting choice.

Somebody go mount one of these and tell me it knocked the K60 off the top spot for Dual Sport Tanker Class.

Revzilla has a discounted price of $202 on the rear tire. Getting pretty pricey. I think I want to see some reviews before I get one of those.

In round numbers isn't it only slightly more expensive than a K60 is going for?

Heres a couple of pics of mine I cut the groove the same angle as the lugs already. And to show
the depth a 1/4 hex key

Only about 150 km on them so really have to try them out when the snow goes.

Yes, but I know what I'm getting with a K60. The Karoo 3 is a mystery tire at the moment. Manufacture says good things about it, but what else would you expect.

It isn't nuclear physics. The Karoo 3 has a tread pattern that you could reliably predict it's off-road prowess from. (to a fair degree anyways)

What you can't predict is the nuances that different compounds bring to the experience. And you sure can't predict lifespan without killing one yourself. :)

I find it promising for off-road bite. But for $200, it will need an honest 4000 mile lifespan for me.

I guess they like the recipe.

I ordered a 150 from Jaxon. I plan on taking a knobby knife to it and make blocks in the center. A friend at work wants to make a knife so I'll see what he comes up with. He said he would make some small tips too. I'll post a pic when i do it. I'm thinking two horizontal cuts then remove the small center piece in between the main lugs.

Just a thought about removing the center chunk of rubber as am neither for nor against that as i want a set myself. with that bit of windage :) I seem to recall as a young man back on the farm we had a tool that resembled big pliers except the ends were for cutting and turned at a 90 degree angle from the handles sort of like a pincher. Maybe that would be the most expeditious way to remove the block 3 cuts per block of rubber the pincher for flat against the tire and regular squeeze type cutters for each end. Just a thought.

I just ordered a set. I'll post my thoughts when they're mounted. Thanks all for the input and opinions.

Snakebitten, I'll swap you for the old style 140 I have in the garage if you want. You pay the shipping to me, I'll pay the shipping to you.

Very kind offer Eric. Really. But my nephew took one look at the tread after I pointed it out and walked back upstairs and brought me down a 150.

He knows me. :)

He shows the Karoo 3 as available on April 12th. But warned it can be a bogus date even though it is in print. According to him, Metzler has increased in price by nearly 40% over the last couple of years. Used to be a better value. The Karoo 3 will be priced almost exactly the same as the K60.

I'm an old carpenter by trade in my younger life. Think I'm gonna mount up a 3/8ths bit in a small router and build a jig to insure I make the same cut in the K60 every time. That will also result in very square cuts as well as consistent depth.

cmastrom had the knife plier idea, I was thinking hot knife but I think you may have the best idea for a good straight cut that you can control the depth on. Let us know how you fashion the jig.

This tool was featured in one of the motorcycle mag's not to long ago: http://www.knobbyknife.com/

If you want to purchase something to shape your tires, this may be the tool to do it! It uses a heated blade.

The knobby knife is designed for something different than grooving tires. THIS is a tire grooving tool. 250 watts and adjustable blade to control depth. Real easy to use and control. There are similar ones on ebay and if you Google 'tire grooving tool' you will find some videos and other tools that range from a little cheaper to several hundred dollars, not to mention stands for thousands of dollars.

What we use is very close to that , its close to 20 years old so a earlier model we use them mostly
For atv tires and dirt bikes when the lugs round off we square the edges up to get more life out of the tire.
If anybody tries it practice on a old car tire first.
