Heated grip install question

Hello all,

When I bought my bike, I got the heated grips in a box. I installed them last weekend and followed the directions to the letter. Today, I walked out to the bike in the garage, grabbed the right grip, and watched the bar end fall to the floor :'(. The carriage bolt that secures the bar end to the bar is gone. As a part of the install of the new grips (longer than the non-heated ones), you drill a hole where there is a "punch" in the bar (presumably from the factory anticipating the grips) that later secures the larger/wider throttle cable assembly. Anyway, when it is put all back together, there is a gap between the throttle cable assembly and the switch pod that isn't there originally. I suspect that I need to redrill the hole further from the bar end than the instructions indicated.

So, a couple of questions:
1) Does anybody else have the grips and have a similar issue or thought on the install?

2) Any idea where I could get a new carriage bolt that would fit?

I believe the bolt is stainless steel, for sure available through your Yamaha dealer. possibly through a good industrial hardware supply store.

you can pretty much index the throttle assembly any where you want, by where you drill the hole. I narrowed my bars by about 1/2" on each side at the time when I installed the grips and removed the index pins on the switch housings so I could set them where I wanted. drilled the throttle index hole as needed for the narrowing I did.

NImbus, I don't think you mean carriage bolt, which is a rounded smooth head bolt which has a square shank just under the head before the threads. The bolt you need is an allen head or heax cap bolt, and yes you can get them in Stainless Steel so it is silver. Most places you look will have that size, but wll be black. You might want to take the other end out to see the length of bolt, as it is probably close to 3-4 inches or 75-100mm in length.

You're right, not a carriage bolt, but it looks sorta similar to the uninitiated. I went to Home Despot over my lunch and found some candidates with the right thread pitch. I don't particularly care how it looks in the short term, as long as it holds the bar end on. How I lost the bolt and not the bar end weight is beyond me as it fell off as soon as I touched it in my garage.

I'm going to re-drill the hole in the bar so it is further inboard, thereby moving the throttle assembly/grip, etc in and allowing the bar end to, hopefully, fit more flush into the recess. As far as I'm concerned, the install directions are patently wrong about where to drill the hole. I will admit to the conceivable possibility that the bolt rattled loose, but....
