Can I use the black and blue/black (or black/green) wires on the heated grip socket to directly power my oxford grips, ie is the wiring good enough, or do I need to use the connector to fire a relay and run a feed from the battery through the relay.

On the same basis I'd like to use the accessory light connector to power my gps, but if I am going to have to build a switched circuit for the grips I may as well use a fuse panel for both.

That's how I wired my Oxfords. I used the Black/Green (12V Engine On) option.

Both of what you're suggesting would work fine, but you'd need to ID the appropriate wires in the connector and either splice into the wiring or find the appropriate connectors - this has been discussed in a couple different threads over the years and is somewhat confusing. The heated grips connector is designed and fused for heated-grip loads and the Yamaha accessory that plugs in here is one of the hottest. It should have plenty of headroom for any heated grip setup you have. The GPS load is miniscule, so the acc light connector should have more than enough.

If you want to keep things simple, Easter Beaver makes switched fuse kits that are plug-and-play with the aux light connector, using it to sense key on. If you only need a few circuits, their 3CS fits inline entirely in the battery area so doesn't require finding a mounting place for a fuse box. There is an option for one circuit to be unswitched which makes it suitable for a battery tender hookup that would also work great for heated clothing. The remaining two switched circuits would be suitable for your heated grips and GPS.
