Interesting. That's not a standard panel mount HT. Is it a wireless unit?I have one mounted to the right hand guard, I can reach the knob with my thumb and see the flashing light while seated. It's an aluminum strap with double sided tape holding the Heattroller in place.
On my '12 I panel mounted them on the left upper fairing.
My only issue with this was when the rare maintenance occurred that I needed to pull that panel, it was a little bit of a PITA. The panel mount Co-Ax female port is lower down on the same panel, but that just un-plugs. If I needed to remove the entire panel, I did have to remove the HT knobs and take them out of the panel. The wiring is long enough to pull the panel aside for some things. I loved being able to see them and adjust as needed by sight instead of only by feel.
Drill a smaller pilot hole first, then the larger hole. It helps avoid drill walk and cracking. Or use a forstner bit. This is what i was thinking i'd do...My only concern is drilling into a painted panel, but I dont think that can be helped....

This is what I do, minus the ziptie. I have the little strap looped around the handlebar is a safety tether. Have had it mounted that same way on four different bikes now.I Velcro it to the top of the front brake reservoir and add a small zip tie for extra safety. Easy to remove in summer or use on another bike.
I have the same foam on my grips and I like your location a lot better then where I installed my controllerWith 3M VHB tape under the left cluster - looks very clean.
