I purchased my new 2013 Tenere about two weeks ago. I quickly found out on the forum there was a headlight recall on the wire harness. I contacted the dealer I purchase it from and they said they will be conducting the recall during my first 600 mile service.y When I was at a yamaha dealership today I asked how long the recall would take and they told me it will be a while on my bike as I have the yamaha engine gards on and they will need to remove them along with all of the body work and fuel tank. I thought I read some where that this was abouta half hour job? Am I wrong? Do any of you have the instructions on how to take care of the recall? now I am just curious on what this all takes to get the job done.

Thanks!

I just had mine done, and watch while they did it...They only have to remove the two right side panels and the 4 screws holding the headlight assembly in front...I have Alt Rider crashbar on my bike... Took them 45 mins....probably would be less if I hadn't been chatting up the tech....

Thanks, Good to know. I thought it seemed odd when I was told they would have to pull the tank and remove the cash bars. Seemed to me the side panels and headlight assembly would do it so you confirmed my suspicion.

Thanks again!

I waited while they replaced mine. About 45 minutes. I have the Touratech crash bars and they said nothing about it slowing them down.

You guys doing your own, did you buy the upgrade or what? I really don't want to let a dealer touch my bike...

I offered to bring the light bucket in so they could do mine, had it apart anyway. They wanted the whole bike, sheesh.

The dealer and Yamaha are concerned about liability so they insist the dealer do the complete job. They can then notify the NHSTA that that the job has been done by Yamaha and resolve themselves of further liability.

PWFD.... Sound to me like this might be the 1st one for your dealership. If you want to expedite the job you may want to remove the crash bars before you go to the dealer. They'd like that.

Or maybe just explain that you can remove the side panels w/o removing the crash bars. And that you're not worried about a few minor scratches, IF you're ok with that. If any scratches occur, they likely would be on the un-painted surfaces, fwiw. Most of the time they remove the crash bars simply to avoid any potential for scratching up the side panels, or because they don't know it's not necessary. Your call.

Jeesh, for as long as it takes to remove the side plastic, I'll just take it off myself in the parking lot and take it home with me :) Much easier than having then F up removing my alt riders...

::026:: Popped the required plastic bits myself. The tech rolled it back and maybe 20 minutes later I was on my way...

Anybody who has touched a wire before can do it easily. The instructions with diagrams look much more complicated that it really is - make sure you follow the instructions for the S10 not the R! :). BTW, you don't need to remove the headlamp bulbs - just disconnect them. You only need to remove the sidelamp bulbs (and reuse them). Feeding the new harness through the headlamp housing could be a little tricky, but nothing extraordinary - just tie a cord to the old harness before pulling it out so that you can use the cord to pull back the new harness. All it needs is a little thinking (and patience), otherwise everything is pretty easy to do.

It's all about your relationship with your dealer. I went ant talked to mine and told him I had the bike all apart for valve adjust. I carried in the old harness and they gave me the new one. Develop that relationship. it matters.

The swap was nothing.
