They just went out for no reason. New bulbs and fuse. Everything else works fine including the park lights. High Beam shield goes up and down, just no power to the headlights. Any ideas??? Thanks.

The forum search function and Google are your friend... But here's a short-cut for you: http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=2707.0

There's a lot of great info if you take the time to read the entire thread.

Redcat,

I had exactly the same thing happen to me on 95 south in Connecticut last summer. Wiring harness was fine on the bulb connector end, bulbs and fuses were good too. Pulled off the plastic and unplugged the main connector to the headlight harness and unplugged the relay. No luck. Got a hotel, took it to a Yamaha dealer next morning, and no luck. Then for no apparent reason whatsoever, another flip of the key and the lights were back on. No guesses as to what the problem was, but it hasn't happened since. Try cycling the key a bunch of times. Good luck!

Thanks guys. Do remember reading about this a while back and thinking, won't happen to me in this cooler climate! Not sure if the melted thing is my problem yet ,but what about drilling a couple of small holes in the back covers to help with cooling? Do remember a while back smelling this burning rubber smell that eventually went away. Mentioned it to my Dealer at the time but they didn't have any ideas. Will get into it again tomorrow and keep you posted.
sail2xxs: please disregard my PM.

Drilling holes would just allow additional moisture into the housing... Not the ideal thing when corrosion has been potentially linked to this issue. Read the thread. Good solutions and ideas there, many of which have worked well for folks for thousands of miles. My second harness (first melted and was replaced under warranty) has gone around 30,000 miles without incident or failure.

Make sure that's your problem first, then if it is try the suggestions in the thread that have worked, like the ceramic headlamp bulb plugs, etc. My guess is you'll be fine.

Just my two centavos...

OK. I think my problem may be different. Both lights went out at the same time and my connectors are in perfect shape, no melting. Just no power through the wires. Wires look OK too. Anybody know where to find the headlight Relay?

You tested the lines with a meter at both ends?

Yup. Found the relay. $60. here or $42. at Cheap Cycle parts. No stock here, of course. Going to try getting it tested at an electrical component store on Monday.

OK,OK, you guys were right. Its the wiring although the connectors look fine. Must have melted further back before the Y to both lights thereby shorting both lights at the same time. We are simply going to run new heavier wiring to the 2 headlights from the connector under the top right side panel. Thanks for all replies.

Got lights again but, GRRRR ,no high beams. Gotta take a rest and then play some more. Found the 4 pin connector slightly burnt. The one under the right side top panel. So installed a new connector and rewired all the way up to the headlight. Its only 4 wires all the way. Think I may have missed a ground somewhere to my high beams. At least I hope its something easy. Even found some 90 degree connectors for right inside the lights, so you can't tell its rewired from the outside.

Have you taken it to your dealer? Mine reported the issue for warranty and it's being replaced. At this point it seems to be a known problem as the warranty coordinator didn't ask to see the bike or even pictures.
I bring it up because trying fixing it yourself may work but if not may invalidate the warranty.

Warranty. What warranty? Mine expired a year ago. Generally I don't trust getting work done at the Dealer. At $110. an hour it ain't an option. Yes it was an extra ground wire to the high beam shutter. All good to go. Greg the Pole being close by, and an electrician to boot found my problem.
