has anyone changed their oil pan? Is it worth taking to the shop?

I developed a slow leak from my oil pan recently. after an inspection, I found where I think the leak was coming from. I must have bent my pan after discovering a rock that exceeded the bikes ground clearence. So anyway, I have a new pan and some gaskets. The service manual is 93.00 plus.... Based on anyones experience, should I ry this without a manual? Or should I pay an hour of labor at the local dealership?

Do it yourself. Busted mine the same way. Its very straight forward. Just go slow. Your oil light may come on for a little while after the oil fill but just stop and start the engine a couple of times. Seems to take a little while for the oil level to readjust and fill in all the holes.

Very easy to drop the pan. Just keep track of the diff length bolts. There is one up inside of a pocket about in the center.
While you have the new one have the long tab cut off and re weld to hole up. unless you want it to get wacked off later..

As others have said, it's easy. Just keep track of the bolts.

For others who might have this problem, if you want to try and get by cheap (or are in an emergency situation), you might try JB Weld or another epoxy-type product. Some report excellent results; others say it doesn't hold up.

Use a torque wrench!!!! Do NOT over tighten any bolts.

Ditto on the correct torque - it's imperative here, IMO. 7.2 ft lbs or 86 (86.4 to be precise) inch lbs on any/all of the bolts you'd be snugging back up. Go in a criss cross pattern and don't lose track of the 2 dowel pins.

Also, the SM calls to apply Three Bond No.1541C (permatex ultra black or gray is fine, too) sealant between the gasket and pan.

Give 'er hell!

Welcome to the club. Lots of good advice. Cracked mine huffing it over a "minor" rock slide. Chickened out and had the dealer replace it - incl strainer, strainer cover and one drain plug.

Like a dumby, I stripped the head of one of the bolts. It's a button head torq's bolt. One of the long ones that goes through the oil screen inspection plate. And you guessed it.... National back order. Why me?

Take the bolt with you to ACE or Fastenal or call a few bearing supply houses, (some also carry fasteners). You're in Vegas, not some po dunk little town. And BTW, I would double check that fastener against the others. Yamaha uses very few torx fasteners, most are allen head. I'm too lazy today to pull my skid plate and check.

Ok! Got some bolts. Just reinstalled the plate. Blue thread lock. 86.4 inch pounds of torque. Crossing pattern. Etc... Was I supposed to use permitex on the inspection plate? I used it on the oil pan but not the inspection plate. It seems to be weeping/seeping.

My all time favorite gasket sealer is Permatex Copper Spray a Gasket. Spray it on, give it a few minutes to get tacky. Seals very good with no mess.

@Don in Lodi: yes new gaskets. Gasket for the inspection plate is a rubber band kind of thing. I lubed it with oil after putting it in place. When I took it apart there didn't seem to be any sealant anywhere. Just the gasket.
