There have been many bikes that had enclosed chain drives over the years. The Harley FXRT from the mid '80s comes to mind. Butaco used it on many of their bikes like the Matador. I have seen it on older Japanese bikes too. On the FXRT, the chain ran in an oil bath and the chain and sprockets lasted a very long time.

I ride a Super Tenere 1200 and have done for almost 5 years now and will have it for, at the very least, another two years. But, I’m obsessed with BMW GS’s. They live rent free in my mind.
I can relate to that. A friend I went touring with to France, Spain and Andorra in the 1980s had an 80 - still has - and it performed so well for her it made a huge impression. That, along with the BMW pr campaigns of the McGregor series, etc, made it very front centre.

The only reason I moved to the ST is because my current Husky required a lot to get right from the factory and I read too many accounts of GSesses requiring the same. The Husky was cheap as chips, so I could swallow that....just. The GS is platinum price point, but in many instances does not reflect that.

I almost bought a GS last year , but the sales manager could not have been a bigger jerk . so I left and bought another Tenere ...... and this Tenere has not been as good as my gen 1 . been to the shop on a warranty item and a recall and may have another issue developing . 18 months of ownership and 3 k on the clock and these petty issues that keep popping up make me wonder . I'm leaving on a 10 day trip to Colorado on the 15th of June , we will see how it does on this trip.

If there was a BMW dealership closer, it would make a huge difference to me.

There is a Harley dealership that is local.

My bike has warranty until 8/23, maybe they will have the bugs worked out by then.

But, if they didn't have their Beemers, they couldn't brag about having one to their friends that had no knowledge of motorcycles. Bragging about riding a Honda just doesn't have the same panache. Same way about bragging that you ride a Harley. People in the know. . . . know. People that don't ride, have their own image of certain bikes. The Japanese big 4 don't have the "spark" that BMW & H-D, or even Indian, do. And, I know people that haven't even heard of KTM. To some people reliable is just soooo boring.
Every manufacturer has brand loyal followers. Honda and Yamaha most certainly have their fair share. I was one of them. I rode Yamaha's or Honda's exclusively for almost 40 years.

There are a whole bunch of people that buy bikes that are best for them rather than being able to brag about it to their friends. The BMW GS has been at or near the top of most testers "best bike" list for a number of years. There are real quantifiable differences between motorcycles that keep it on top. Perhaps, just perhaps, many buyers wanted the best bike available. What a concept.

I used to wonder why folks would buy a Harley but I haven't for a long time. Up until now they did not make a bike that interested me in the least. I didn't get it, but I didn't have to. Plenty of folks bought them and loved the bikes and/or the experience. Who am I to question why they bought what they did or what their motives were. And why would it matter to me anyway? They had their reasons even if I thought it made no sense. Live and let live and enjoy your ride.

I don't quite understand why so many folks feel compelled to put down folks that bought something different than they did. They just can't understand how someone can make a perfectly rational decision that differs from their own. It reminds me of the old Ford versus Chevy discussions. Pointless.

Yes, this is true, most owners have the hard quantifiable evidence logged in their checking account record....;)

I don't put down the person making the choice; ride what you want. I just put what they choose; big difference. Drink whatever flavor Kool-Aid you want; I'm not thirsty.
Fair comment. Some drink Kool-Aid, others seem to frequently enjoy drinking bitter.

It is a big difference and it would be nice if it was true. Your previous post on the subject, which I quoted, stated nothing about the merits of the bikes but rather the owners being able to brag to their friends about owning a Harley or a BMW.

You're saying they don't? It was not derogatory. . . . it was a fact. . . . that "I" have experienced. You're doing it now. You brag about how great and wonderful BMW is. You tell us how experienced you are, and all of the bikes that you've ridden. . . . actually claiming that you are a "professional motorcyclist". . . . implying that you are the know all, end all of motorcycle knowledge. And, yet, you have no clue whether I'm a beginner rider. . . . or a "professional motorcyclist". There's some guys on here that I take what they say about the Tenere, both good & bad, as gospel. . . . you're not one of them.

Good thing I've never heard S10 owners get all uppity about their bikes. And what right do others have to enjoy a choice I didn't make? If they don't appreciate my unsolicited opinions about their choices they clearly have a chip on their shoulder.

What right do others have to enjoy a choice I made? If someone asks me about my bike I tell them to FO and to not even look at it. :p

chill dudes it is a motorcycle ..... wound up tight and no place to go . I looked at the Harley , nice bike , dealers suck . looked at the BMW , nice bike , dealers suck . looked at Ducati multi , nice bike , local dealer actually very helpful and nice . and on it goes. pick your bike , if you like it man its a great day , if you don't , one can sell it or trade it or set it on fire. im a fan of my Tenere , but it does not run my life any more than a forum we like to express our selves on . I have a wife for that . if one chooses a BMW and can afford it no matter what it cost ,power to them . or any other bike . if some one wants to talk to me about my bike , well that is a cool thing to me .

I saw 2 of these in the wild on separate occasions when I was in the So Cal end of last week. Both were the black/Grey color scheme. I gotta say.....they not as horrifically ugly in person. Not sure about the "Mattel" looking motor though.
