Hard Choices

About three weeks ago I had the opportunity to purchase a slightly damaged 2021 Honda Africa Twin at a great price. I repaired all the stuff the previous idiot did to her and yesterday I sold it. I was very impressed with the bike and if I was a younger man I might have kept it. When I compared the two bikes for what I do and what I want to do the S10 is just about perfect. Now this fits my size and style and the fact that the two S10's I have owned have performed flawlessly. The AT was sooo pretty and had some cool stuff that I really liked, but it had almost too much gadgetry. I spent a year getting my S10 set up to give me the ride experience I desire. So in the end the S10 stays.

She is a beauty and a hoot to ride. I am old and comfort is king. I know what the S 10 can do and I know what I should not do.

Thats still a good looking bike !
I looked at two of them (2017 and 2018) before I picked my 2019 S Ten. Both were less expensive and alluring, regardless of price. The ATs are Sirens, no doubt. 21" front. Beautiful fit and finish. Strong but not hair-pulling power. Great weight and balance. Farkle potential galore. But... no cruise control and it's just a bit too - I don't know what. There's no heft. It's not nearly as planted as my S Ten on the road. Yep, for this 64 year old LD tourist who wants to scrag on fire roads on occasion, it's the S Ten. At 50, I'd sell my *?* for an AT.

Banditryder,
I thought I was alone in my brilliant observations and ability to dissect the ins and outs of motorcycles. Now I know that there are two of us. I think they are both great but they lean in different directions as far as intended purpose. I am a tall rider 6'5 and I have a hard time finding adult sized bikes. This 2021 At has CC, something that is missing on my Gen 1 S10.

I firmly believe Yamaha would have sold waaaay more Tenere’s if they just would have improved the lousy factory paint job.

Those AT's look great. I've not had a chance to ride one, but have ridden at times with folks you have them. Solid choices either way.

If Yamaha comes out with a Tenere 900 at some point (which they should, they have the triple motor and man that could be an amazing bike) I could see myself switching to that. I keep eyeing the T7 as well.
There are always new shiny things, no? :)

Africa Twin is on my short list should it become necessary to replace the S10. A GS also is on the list. The DCT has appeal to me. Apple and android car play as well. BMWs quick shift, and shaft have their appeal as well. The problem is with no forced errors my S10 could easily see me to the end.

You know what they say. If it ant broke don’t fix it.

Such a nice bike, and it has a shift lever and everything. Glad there's at least one Japanese manufacturer who is trying to be relevant in the big Adventure bike market.

Apropos of nothing, a neighbor of mine has a newer AT and between the dealer breaking a cowling plastic during maintenance and him breaking a plastic part in a 0 MPH tipover, I'll gladly keep my S10.

I really think it is a nice bike. The handlebars are very close to the instrument cluster so you have to be careful with hand guards. The six speed transmission is spot on, very smooth up and down. It is like a stripped down version of an S10. However, Honda is slow on the uptake and wait till they do things right. I give the AT two thumbs up all the way and will be sad to see her leave my garage. I would not let my selling her disparage the bike in any way. I bought it to sell it. Tis my nature.

The paint scheme is beautiful.......Chain drive, not so much.
