Due to some :-X . I need to replace my handle bars. The stock one can be purchased for about $80 to $100.

However since they are bent, I don't feel comfortable trying to bend them back.

So... What are some cost effective alternatives?

There are a lot, and it has been covered to a very technical degree in other discussions. Not being a dick, but you need to find those other discussions and you can start to possibly correct some of the comfort issues you may not have even thought you had.

I went with a Pro-Taper ATV Mid, similiar rise with half the sweep. I have also since added a Tusk 5/8 riser .....

Clint64 and Obrianmcc - Thanks. I tried doing a search last night on my iPad, but it didn't work well. Then I did another search and only found 4 entries. Sometime search works well and other times it doens't.

Obrianmcc - did you have to get longer clutch and brake lines?

I have another forum member who might assist me with another solution, too. So I will let folks know what I end up doing.

I have put over 16k miles on my S10 and I didn't have any issues with the stock bars. It appears some do, but they worked for me. But since the left side is now bent.... I want to replace them. I afraid if try to bend them back that:

1) I won't get it quite right
2) It will fatigue the metal and cause a potential weak point.

Thanks!

Hi Tom -
Obviously feel and fit is personal. Plus, the need to be careful about the lengths of brake lines and such.
Can't help with individual suggestions, but can add a little.

Trevor/DCStrom put a set of bars on that were flatter and didn't have as much sweep back. While I liked that, I'm taller and they would have been too low for me to stand while riding on gravel & dirt. Trevor is a touch shorter than you, so maybe try finding his old posts and add a riser?

Well, the next time your manpad doesn't work, use the always useful google (or whatever) search and search a domain. it is far more effective than most forum searches, especially if they are not working for you.

here, give this a try handlebars site:yamahasupertenere.com in the search bar

Even though you are still coming across as a "dick", you suggestion in the last sentence was good. Some of us are more internet savvy than others. I didn't find any of your handlebar posts until later, I'm assuming you found that offensive.

What I found offensive was your passive aggressive bullshit. I made a remarkable suggestion, which was to use previous posts that had the crap you were looking for. Your issue is that you couldn't work or didn't know how to work the internet and expected me to 1) give a shit and 2) to feel sorry for you.

I swapped out my bars with Fasst, added the rox 2" risers. Did not do the longer line mod as it was not needed.

Do want me to check and see if I still have my old bars? I can part with them if you like the stock ones. I am not a big fan of them and am way happy I swapped them out but it is all about preference.

Let's calm down and remember we are have the S10 and are here for a reason, not a big fan of bashing on a forum. ::020::

Wow, great offer, I appreciate it. I may PM you to take you up on that.

The stock ones, worked fine for me. But then it may be like all the threads on the suspension, I don't know what I'm missing, as I don't have a comparison point.

Patrickg450 and thfraser -

If you guys get the stock bar thing figured out, I'll be passing through Patrick's neck of the woods at the end of next week and could pickup/deliver. :)

Waahhhh you didn't like my bars! ;) Actually they are Moose CR-HI - steel, about $20. Added a set of Rox rotating risers for about $90 for some height and some flexibility in back/forward range. End result - no need for longer hoses, about 1/2" lower than stock and 1" narrower. Main thing for me is they are straighter and I don't get pain between the shoulder blades that I had with stock. I did a couple of hours on a 1st/2nd gear dirt road the other day, probably 1 hour of that was standing. Bars are perfect for this, nearly as comfortable standing as sitting. I'm 5'11".

The stock ones ones way to swept back for me for standing up any amount of time.
I took them off the bike, held down the clamp area to the ground by driving my truck tire over it.
I then took a 5 ft long steel pipe, slipped it over each side and bent it down toward the ground exactly the same amount, checking it with a tape measure to make sure both sides were even.
It turned out perfect!...and everything fit back on the bars in original position.
I saved myself about $100.00 and got a great deal of satisfaction! :)

Fishcat and dcstrom, thanks for the input.

dcstrom - that sounds like a nice low cost solution. I'm 5'10" so we are close to the same size.

Fishcat and others - Since you bent the bars, do you feel comfortable with them? Do you feel that the strength has been compromised? To me that is my biggest concern. You saw my truck at Romney's, it can definitely hold the bars to the ground, getting a pipe isn't a big deal. I'm just concerned that if I bend them too much, that they my suffer from metal fatigue. Perhaps I worry to much?

I've been driving my backup bike, the sweep on the bars now has about a 3" difference between the left and the right. I guess I could bend the other side so the sweep is the same... Hmmm

You should be fine. To reduce the sweep you are more likely to put some cross sectional twist in the tube. I've done it on far larger pieces.
If you don't see any kinking, wrinkling, or hairline fractures you're good to go.
But, if you are uncomfortable with the idea, then by all means buy a bar like dcstrom's and try it out.

Big difference in ride comfort, especially when standing, off pavement.
No indications on the bars that they were bent at all.
The steel is very strong, so I needed a long pipe for leverage.
I would not consider bending them while they were on the bike because I was afraid of breaking something else. :)
