Bark Busters on my DR and will put them on Tenere if I find I am riding anything more than gravel.

The stock is more for weather and stones. Will collapse in a hard drop.

I have Bark Buster Storms on my KLR and will put them on the Tenere at some point.

The Storms have the regular bark buster Aluminum Bark Buster Aluminum guards, but a larger plastic guard than the normal BB hand guards.

I have the BB Storm on my Tenere. Stock handguards do a pretty good job with wind, but will break easily if it meets the ground.
The Storm are not as efficient as stock for wind but are bullet-proof. I will work on a spoiler next winter, with holes and a system to make the spoiler to slide so open or close vents on Storm. Will do pics and a report here.
If you ride on road 90% of the time and off road only 10%, stock are just what you need.

The stock one's do a pretty good job of cutting down some of the handlebar vibration ( compared to none )

Not true!! I have dropped my Tenere way too many times to count where the handguards made hard contact with rocks, trees, ground, etc... And I am not talking about the 2mph tip over in your driveway either. When I got the bike, I thought I would put something more robust on there but the OEMs have more than done their job without getting destroyed. They look like crap now but are still kicking!!

Well, I have seen quite a bunch of friends with broken stock hand guards so I believe it depends. It's very cold in Spring/Fall up here so maybe it breaks more easily at low temp?

The 2014+ is different from previous years BTW. If you buy BarkBusters, make sure you order the right ones.

I'll second this ::008::

The standard do not protect you in bad weather and are pretty crap for anyone who does serious miles.

I have touratech items now on mine with the extended top lip and what a difference ::012::

I'm thinking about getting some of these cause they are a little smaller and have lights. I'm all for more frontal lights just to make yourself more noticeable.
They aren't really for off-road protection but I really don't go there anyway.

And I third that!! :p
When I first bought my Tenere in Colorado I had to ride it into the bed of my friends pickup, he had side racks for his overhead rack and i smacked the guard into it a small scratch.
Twice I have dumped this bike on the bars and no breakage.
Others may look cool and take huge hits but if that's what floats your boat go for it. ::008::

I've had Bark Busters on other bikes but the OEM's on my ST.

FYI on the issue of plastic vs. aluminum, Touratech advocate plastic on their BMW guards.

Protect your BMW F800GS's bars, levers, and controls with a set of Touratech handguards. Built out of extremely tough plastic, these hand guards give you the benefit of being flexible, absorbing impact instead of transferring it to your handlebars or bar mounts like a rigid aluminum or steel guard.

I took the stock ones off and run bark busters. If the weather turns bad, I put a set of handlebar mittens from a snowmobile over them and turn on the grip heaters. Hands stay dry and warm without massive gloves. Definitly the ticket. ::021::

You obviously don't find operating the controls, switches, etc. a problem with the mitts on??

Funny, I find them to be positioned poorly for weather. They should sit higher but that would require rotating the brake perch etc.

I agree with JRE mine are too low to keep the rain off my hands. I`ve got heated grips so my gloves hold warm rain water but then we I stop I cant roll a cigarette because the papers get soggy ( maybe someone's trying to tell me something ) I don`t want to buy the barkbusters product at nearly £100 so the solution eemesreno has looks a good idea, its just finding the right shape of plastic moulding to adapt.

Ok, so why not use handlebar muffs? (other than the fact that they look naf), I did manage to get some cheap cutting board made from plastic from Ikea that forms a good shape when using a heat gun, but then i thought about handlebar muffs and if never go off road do you need the protection from trees, branches anyway?

Mark two version, having looked at eemesreno version I have put the extensions inside the original guard and they look much better, should have done that in the first place, doh!, but wanted to try them out, secured with small S.S bolts and easy enough to remove if I don`t want them in the summer.
