Great bike but can i fix the dodgy fuelling?

I'm wanting to trade my DL1000 for a '15 S10.

I've done a deal in principle, but after 2 test rides i cannot live with the fuelling if it is like the demo bike.

Not worried about power but hard to ride in town/traffic because on a neutral throttle the engine constantly surges (even in t mode). In S I could have passed it off as a rodeo ride ;-)

Otherwise love the bike but need to know this is easily fixed before parting with my 'hard earned..'.

Is there an answer or am i looking at the wrong bike?

Help greatly appreciated.

Cheers
Andy

Hi Tempesc,
sounds like you're looking at the bike I almost bought last month from Rob, I hope they're giving you a good deal? I highly doubt Avon were hard on the bike, but the first 4-5000 miles the bike is a bit 'rough' to use a term, but it will after that break in nicely, and you will love the bike, much better than the V Strom, even though the sound of the skeletons shagging in trash cans will always be there.

Pretty much, there are many threads on this topic in the forum, do a search and you'll see. But rather than adding another thread about the same issue or they will just merge threads anyway. But if you are comfortable with the bike then get it, it will grow on you, also there will be a period of rider adjustment while you get used to this machine and then happy days ::012::
When I first got mine, I thought, "what in the name of all things holy did I do?" This is not your love at first ride kind of bike. Stick with it. Anyway, there are a bunch of top guys on this forum, a few live locally to you.

Research will bring up these two points repeatedly:

1.Throttle Body Sync (start with one cylinder's screw at ¾ turn out. Then sync other TB to it)

2. Bike comes very tight. Engine loosens and changes considerably over first 4-6000 miles.

Lots of happy owners started with your complaint. Good luck!

Agree with snakebitten.

I recently purchased a 2015 ES after owning a 2012 for more than three years. I experienced the throttle problem BIG TIME with my 2012. The CJM (clutch jumper mod) and what snakebitten said saved me from trading it in on anything else. Took about 5,000 miles for a total brake-in.

The 2015 ES is 100% different. Other than the restrictions on the 1-2-3 gears this motorcycle runs great. The restrictions seem to noticeably affect the performance under 3,000 rpms but this should disappear as the engine gains more miles. In 4-5-6 gears this 2015 ES is a rocket. I am considering having the ECU flashed to get rid of the restrictions of 1-2-3 gears but will wait until therre are 5,000 miles and I install a Akropovic exhaust.

The 2015 ES engine is much better than my 2012 ever was.

i have found that the S and T mode on my gen 2 is very different from my early 2011 model ...i find "T" mode is great on the motorway [ giving a very smooth relaxed ride ] but around town it sometimes feels like the "fly by wire" ECU is taking over a bit too much [ i can open the throttle and it responds slowly ] so i use "S" mode when not touring as it gives instant throttle response.

Same answer as on your other post:

CJS Racing are just up the road from you, give them a call, or pop in and talk to Chris, he knows this bike quite well have flashed a fair few and done a few custom setups on the Dyno, mine is faster, smoother and more powerful - and his flash was a big improvement over the ECU-U Flash I originally tried (which was an improvement over stock in most respects)

I agree entirely. It takes time to learn to ride this thing smoothly. My other bike is a Goldwing. It defines smooth. The right hand is the key. Smooth on smooth off. I actually ride mostly in S mode now, which I thought I'd never do a few 1000 miles ago. People spend a lot of money trying to find a mechanical or electronic fix. I'm glad I saved my money.

Cool ::008:: welcome to the...... er... club?

Did you go for the "ex-Avon tyres" bike or a new one out of the crate?

Thanks!

Went new out the crate in the end. For £500 i will know all of its history and as i was not completely happy with the fuelling i thought worth trying another bike to see if it is subtlety different.

I did try a tiger explorer this morning before paying my deposit. Liked it less (my heart was with the XT) and the £1,800 gap more than covers any work i might want to do.

Tonight i will be researching luggage options!

Yeah, I did the Explorer first as well, but did not 'feel' it. It was a nice bike but here I am. There is a luggage thread on here about panniers and wotnot, worth checking them out. If you go Givi / Kappa route, look on ebay under EU, cheapest options are from Italy, even with the higher shipping costs.

It smooths out.
It extremely smooths out with a Flash.
The Tiger 1200 XT was a hoot to ride, I actually liked the 800 but the seat for my big can was not with it.
The 1200 sort of spoke " I need to be maintained at all time$$$$". ::010::
Never messed to much with my 1050 Tiger, it was solid.

I also preferred the 8 to the 12.

I must be getting old but the 12 felt pointless to me on uk roads. By the time i was hitting 7k revs i was flying at the next bend at a velocity from which no good thing could come.

The last 3k were strictly for better riders than me and those who don't want to wait too long to find out if there is life after death....

I got a brand new 2015 S10 and put a two brothers ECU on it with my Yoshimura end can and it runs really smooth from day one (than my last two stock) ::008::

Sounds nice!

A week to go until I get my hands on it - i'm thinking i'll get to know it over the first 600 miles and then so whatever it needs before the first big trip in September.

Dogdaze i've been laughing at this description on and off for a week! So true (at least the metaphor resonated - i've never actually observed skeletons in said activity :). With all that flesh missing it must be like playing air guitar....)

Hooray! ::015::

I'd get riding if the weather it not too bad, leave the farkling for the weekday evenings.
I just fitted my Givi PL2119 rack, bolts supplied are of low quality, but will have to wait to change them out when I can get my hands on some. Too hot to ride this week.
