Two things are obvious and not really mentioned.
1) Yamaha was the cheapest MSRP
2) Yamaha got the best MPG

And last but not least, Yamaha looks the best. (the black ones)

No. The Yamaha does not get the best gas milage. The BMW beats it hands down. I"ve owned both. 72,000kms on my 08 GS12 and 21,000kms on my S10. The Beamer beats the Yamaha by about 5 mpg everytime. Having said that, I still like my S10 best overall. In the video, they mentioned the weak motor in the S10 which surprised me. I find the motor wonderful especially with the Clutch Switch Mod. They also fail to mention that the S10 was voted number #1 Adventure Bike of the Year by Cycle World Magazine this year.

I'm still enjoying the 40% saving over the BMW..

The funny thing is with the fuel thing is I regularly ride with an R1200RT. On the same roads and speeds the S10 gets better economy by about 5-10%.

The guy has Lennies sprockets fitted though because the lack of low end roll on was annoying him a bit, so that may do something.

Don't know. Don't care, Apart from a few little niggles, I am still liking the S10 HEAPS.

Last ride was 300km of dirt roads and tracks, this one was twisties, scenery and slab.

Both had me smiling. I am sure that a BMW would do the same, for a while.

Interesting the Tenere is a Johnny come lately. I have had 5 Tenere's over a 23 year period. The S10 I have only had for for 2 and a half years but I think it has a heritage equal to any in the adventure scene. Yamaha knows how to balance a dual purpose bike, this has been learnt over decades of building them.

Interesting. I ride side by side with a fella on a gs all the time. I ALWAYS use less fuel. Both bikes are stock.

Damn they really did not like the tenere. Not understanding their comments about no power and having to go through the gearbox. I have ridden the gs ans s10 back to back and did not feel the gs had anything on the tenere.

I didn't hear them NOT like the Tenere, I picked up that they didn't find it their #1.

Their policy is to run totally stock bikes to make comparisons apples to apples unless they tell otherwise. So I'm not at all surprised they found the Super Tenere motor uninspiring. I was surprised to not have them talk about an off-idle stumble.

Most folks here on this forum know it just takes the clutch switch mod and adjustment of the white screw (TBS) to fix both, plus break in miles.

They never mention reliability and repair costs or dealer accessibility in these comparisons. Yamaha will surely be on top.

For me... The S10 is the best bike I've owned. There is A LOT that changes as the bike breaks in and every ride is better than the last. My friends can't say the same for theirs...

You know, every time you post comments like this I get an instant day-dream attack. (Gonna get fired someday) You don't even have to post pics. (although I beg that you would)

Lucky Bas#%^d.

You live in Adventure paradise.

My 2008 GS was better on fuel at low speed, like on slow lanes where you tend to be in 2nd/3rd/4th a lot, but it really drank fuel past 75-80, the Tenere is better at higher speed, overall my averages are about the same.

I can agree the Yamaha engine is a bt characterless, but the dyno graphs show it has a far better delivery than the GS which has a torque curve like the outline of a dual hump camel.

Which I suppose is "character". I'm not a big fan of the sound of the Boxer twins either, but plenty of people think they are great.

Lots of people think the Guzzi is loaded with character, and what did they say about the GS and Guzzi engine?...

"looks more like the output of an EKG than a torque curve"...

YAMAHA have gone and ironed all the "character" out, which it seems was a solution to a problem that few wanted. Maybe all YAMAHA have to do is get the bike to default to sports mode, there may be some truth in that.

"Yes. The S10 motor is definitely gruntier down low. I can pull 2000rpm. Can't do that on the Beamer."

:D I stall at traffic lights occasionally because I forget that the motor doesn't pull from idle. I don't blame the bike though it just seems like it has a bit of a bottomless torque curve and I forget there are limits.

Ultimately that (character) is what the article/video represents. What kind of feelings does the connection of the human brain to the machine produce. They will tread lightly on the negative views of the motorcycle or just not say anything about it while raving about the others. Need to keep that good working relationship with the manufacturers so they can continue to get rides, there is lots of competition out there. I think the Tenere is to Utilitarian for most motojournalist and thus it may never get raving reviews. If there was a review on how well it will haul 150+LBS of gear on dirt/pavement, reliability, maintenance/cost of ownership, initial investment, and dealership network, it would probably win hands down.

Having previously owned two BMW's (both 1150 GSA and RT) I will admit that the R motor does have a type of character that I cant quite put my finger on. Part of it is that "John Deer tractor" sound they produce and the other part is looking down and seeing those heads sticking out in the wind. Having some background in aviation, it's reminiscent of my flying days for lack of a better explanation. What "character" the Tenere lacks, is more than made up for in the way of excellent handling, performance, easy maintenance schedule, and no nagging worry about a final drive failure 3000 miles from home. I've always prided myself on being a decent backyard mechanic and could fix/figure most things out, but I'd rather just let go of that angst and enjoy my rides and trips when I can without all the drama. ::021::

Personally I like the S10 motors "character". All bikes have it. It's more of a refined kind of character though. Now I am running K60's I get "character" from the tires. It's now like a bit of a jazz band.

What is different on the S10 as opposed to other "90 Deg Engines" I have owned is you get forward motion at 1500 RPM with a big thumper style output.

Previously it was more like this video with other bikes...

A Confused Field Marshall tractor !!
