It's already been a long winter and it will still be a long time before riding season starts again. So I am sitting here in front of the computer dreaming of future rides and past rides. I thought I would share with you one of the rides we took on the third week in October of 2009. I dreamed up this trip a week before we left because a friend of mine called me up and said he had some time off work. It turned out that he didn't go with us but my son Eric and friend Mike were all gunghoe about it so the plan was on. We were going to head to Rocky Mt. national park then work our way to the Grand Canyon then back home. We had six days to ride. The problem was, it was a little late in the riding season and a big snow hit Rocky Mt. park right when we were ready to leave. So we ran the trip in reverse and headed south through Texas and New Mexico to start .
We rode 1014 miles on the first day and ended up in Santa Rosa, New Mexico for the first night's camp.
We stopped right at dark for the last time the first day to fill up here.
Petrified Forest
The second day we camped at the Grand Canyon. The next morning we wanted to get an early start so we thought we were getting up at 6:00 am but with the time change and Arizona not honoring Daylight saving time it turned out to be 4:00 am. We walked into the restaurant and they said what do you want? [ we don't open for 2 more hours]
We then headed for Monument Valley.
We circled around above the four corners and ended up for the night in Mesa Verde National Park. It turned out to be free entry because it was National Park Weeked.
The next morning we rode through the Million Dollar Highway to the Dolores Canyon. That is one of my favorite roads of all time.
Look close and you can see the Hanging Flume on the cliff from the old mining days
Then it was up to the Black Canyon of the Gunnison to camp.
We rode to the bottom of the canyon too.
We stopped by Cimarron to see the train
We went through Rocky Mt. National Park and they had bladed the snow that stopped us from going that direction five days earlier.
Then it was a long way back across Nebraska to home.
Thanks for reading.
