This Christmas we've decided to go away from home for a change. We're staying with some family up the coast in the village of Bamburgh in Northumberland. Now some of the UK folks will have heard of Bamburgh, some may not and I'm fairly sure you fine folk on the other side of the Atlantic will not have come across it. It is a tiny village which has one of the best preserved castles in the UK. The castle has been used in a few films, the most famous was probably El Cid (Chuck Heston at his best). See link below for a taster (if you like castles that is...) -

Geographically it's not far from Lindisfarne Castle on Holy Island - http://www.nationaltrust.org.uk/lindisfarne-castle/

and Alnwick Castle - http://www.alnwickcastle.com/ used in the Harry Potter movies. It's hard to travel 5 minuets in Northumberland without passing a castle !

Well I am happy to report our first Christmas away from home was a great success ::008:: No stress or hassle with the catering, no mess to tidy, just kick back and let it all go on around you. I think we've started something now...

Low key is great! Happy for you.

My ex is German and the kids got to the point of dreading the long flights to visit Oma and see ABC-ABC.

ABC-ABC was their shorthand for Another Bloody Castle and Another Boring Church.
