I don't see how anyone could ride
around in the stock sport mode on a regular basis. That is unfun and I find it pretty much useless. I know there are flashing options, but I really don't know what Yamaha was thinking with that. That's just my opinion. This engine cannot sing at all in that mode.

Hi.
Most riders of S10's ride in that mode most of the time. On mine a standard non re-mapped it's bit snatchy from low throttle speed but once your'e underway she livens up very well.
Perhaps you could explain in more depth what you mean.
The T touring mode is much smoother better for pillion use and if doing off road unless your experienced or wet conditions or good in town when traffic is dense.

I have 83,000 miles on two Tenere's and 80,000 miles of that is using the Touring mode. And now that you mentioned it I don't know if the Sport mode has been used on my 31,000 mile 2015 ES. Might try that today. Sport and Touring modes seem to be personality driven / ridden. I know one rider that is a Sport mode rider and wants to get the ECU flashed. Me I am an older rider and the only Sport in my life is in my mind.

Not sure what Tenere you have though I find the 2015 ES a lot easier to ride than the 2012.

I did the first 5k or so in T mode - S seemed way too jerky - but I got accustomed to it, and spend ~60% of my time in S mode now.

It takes a delicate wrist - but immediacy of the torque is worth it.

This feels like baiting, but...

Coming off a ZX14R, 190 HP, 2.6 sec 0-60 MPH, well...

Sport is the only mode I use. I tamed the throttle with the Power Commander PCFC. It's not perfect, but it's good enough for all day use.

Having said that, this is my first Big Fat Pig ADV. It's not ready for off road use yet, and neither am I on it. So, would I use Sport mode off-road? Nope!

I haven't even tried touring mode on mine. Sport works fine. A little snatchy, but no big deal.

Again, RonH and I are in agreement. "S" does require a more "delicate" touch. Took me about five city miles to get that touch. No more ham fisting the throttle/clutch. Now, I don't even notice. I can't remember the last time I was in "T". ::26::

I highly recommend the Throttle Tamer to help with Sport Mode. I find myself in S Mode all the time now.

Clicked over to Touring Mode at the start of the NMBDR to help keep things in check. Later in the first day I was rolling up some gravel inclines and the bike was kinda sluggish. Flicked over to Sport Mode and roosted the rest of the climbs till the end.

The Throttle Tamer helps mitigate that initial 'snatchiness', and combined with adjusting your wrist twist slightly till muscle memory kicks in helps too. I don't even notice it now. If you are not going to flash, get the Tamer. Internal bearings also eliminate throttle tube maintenance.

Don't forget the throttle body sync and air screw adjustments. ;)

While I do prefer T mode in heavy city traffic, I can get by using either.

May try the 'tamer' sometime in future though. :)

Sport mode was doable but required a finely calibrated wrist. With the reflash it's easy and smooth now. I hardly ever use T mode anymore.

Much like mebgardner, I came to the ST from two previous FJRs, so spent most of the time in "S" mode. I usually used "T" for rain or dirt roads. Also worked well the few times my wife rode with me.

Same here. With 32,000 miles on my 2012 and now 29,000 miles on my 2014, I am almost always in S mode. I might try T mode occasionally in city traffic, but that's it.

109k on my '12 and after the first day I never used T mode again. On the Gen I the only difference I could tell was less responce for the amount of rotation in T mode.

Only 10k on the Gen II, but it's been in S the entire time.

Both bikes benefited from adjusting out most of the slack in the cables.

Is there really any significant difference other than more throttle per rotational movement in S?

On my 2016 XT1200ZE I found sport mode really exhilarating except for the initial twist of the throttle as mentioned by others. However when I increased CO2 to +15 to eradicate stalling at traffic lights I found it also helped with the Jerkiness of sport more on initial throttle twist. Now I switch between both modes according to how I like to ride at that moment.

Only use sport mode...+1 for the eliminating play in the throttle cable - it makes gear changes and on/off throttle so much nicer. Also, combine that with adjusting the gear selector lever down so there is no free play between your boot and the under side of the lever...again, all helps smooth out the gear changes.
