I need to park in the roadway to retrieve my mail and wish the S10 had them. They are great safety feature when parked at roadside, maybe offering assistance to someone else, checking a map, putting on rain gear, etc... I've use 4 way flasher sometimes when stopped at red lights to help others see me and reduce the risk of getting hit from behind and when riding in heavy rain. In Florida ya need all the help ya can get! Four way flashers never hurt anyone and can save your life.

Most European models have them so does H-D.....

Re: Gear Indicator on '14?

I'm kinda funny about MC safety, I've lost a few friend over my 55+ years of riding, and have seen other riders killed or injured. It's no fun dragging a buddy off the roadway or administering CPR to an accident victim. The death of a close friend many years ago motivated to become an MSF instructor/ride coach.

The local paper here, Sarasota Herald-Tribune reports 2-3 MC accidents a week during snow bird season and maybe a fatality a months.

Did ya ever forget to cancel your turn signal, I have.... scary shit! Drivers sometime make decision based on what they see and assume your about to turn when that's not your intention. They pull out and BOOM, you're dead! Self cancelling signals should be mandatory for that very reason, well at least I think so!

Donk,
I do that all the time.....No big deal unless someone makes into one and then you say: You low tolerance, thin skinned moped riding fool! What the heck are you doing on this adult forum? :) That should get things rolling. ::013::

My 2014 VW Jetta Sportwagon has the same style gear indicator. Clutch is in no reading, of course you can always look at the stick if you cant feel what gear your in...

Hey Donk, it's a great joke.... :)) :))

Sorry if I came across a little abrupt, no harm intended...... but watch out for those guys that Combo described, there's few here! ::025:: ::018::

We Florida riders gotta stick together. By the way do you know your way around the Everglades? I hear there's a few forest service roads in the park and I'm looking for a guide.

mrpete64, I got a bit off track... ooops. Did you get the answer you were looking for?

I lived in the Rhinebeck/Kingston/Poughkeepsie area of NY for 38 years before retiring to Florida 10 years ago. I sure do miss the Hudson River and the Catskill Mountains..... but not those winters. Where are you located?

Re: Gear Indicator on '14?

Paul, I agree about self cancelling turn signals and 4 ways are not a bad thing either. It amazes me that HD has them on every bike and they don't even have neutral safety switches for the kickstand! I know my way around the Everglades but only on paved roads. My Explorer is down here and the Super Tenere is at my house in Wisconsin. The Explorer is a great bike but does better staying on the pavement.

Have you ever had self-cancelling indicators not cancel on you, or cancel when you didn't want them to? Scarey shit, lol. Whatever solution is put in place needs manual intervention from time to time. Oh and if you are looking at the dash to see what gear you are in, you will see that the indicators are on too, just before you hit something because you are looking at the dash and not the road.

I don't think I'd like self-cancelling indicators on a bike, but then I've never had them, so I don't know. I'm not bothered about a gear indicator, but then I've never had one, so I don't know. Maybe I might find it occasionally useful, and maybe not showing the gear when the clutch was in would be occasionally annoying.

Would I want to pay a significant price premium for a 'proper' gear indicator because Yamaha had to redesign the gearbox, wiring loom, casing and maybe other bits because of it, definitely not.

Re: Gear Indicator on '14?

I had a gear indicator on my '85 Honda Nighthawk I rode for 5 or 6 years. It didn't stop me from trying for that extra gear on the freeway. :)
I remember thinking "That'll be useful" when I got the bike, but it turned out it wasn't useful to me at all.
As for 4-way flashers, in 45 years of driving cars and motorcycles, I've never actually had occasion to use the flashers. I did try them out once to see if they worked on an MGB I had, but the switch broke and stopped the turn signals from working.

So I'm in the "don't raise the price for a gear indicator" camp.

That's good to hear Brick, thx for the update. ::008:: Every time you post about you're '14 I check my bank account, maybe in the fall when I return from Europe.
This is the first I've seen mention of 4 way flashers. Are you holding back on anything else, come on fess up!

jb, this is the 21st century, get with it man. ::025::

An MGB, nice, bet it's BRG in color. That switch isn't a Lucas product by chance is it. ::010:: ::010:: ::010::
In the early 60's when my friends had MG's, Triumph's, Healeys, I was driving a Datsun 2000, aaaah the good old days!

I'm all for keeping prices down but not at the cost of safety.

Re: Gear Indicator on '14?

Being a UK bike I have 4 way flashers (hazard lights) on mine, but I think what would be more useful as a safety feature (if half the population didn't use them at inappropriate times) would be rear fog lights.

If you are worried about breaking down and not being seen, maybe it's time to carry road flares.

+1..
I just realized..... the US 2014's probably have the European switched, hence the 4-way flashers...... NICE! ::008::
And maybe flash-to-pass! ....

The BMW bikes that I have had in the past have all had self-canceling signals, and I was never happy with them. I'd constantly have to check to see if they've cancelled, and re-engage them if so. The BMW signals cancel about 100' too early IMO.

I prefer the manual turn signals, where I've developed the habit of turning off the signals when I'm ready for them to be off. Probably have forgot to turn them off once in two years, and they weren't on any longer than ten or fifteen seconds more than I wanted them to be.

Because of cars, riders have the expectation that self-canceling turn signals on a bike should relieve the rider of having to manually cancel. This isn't true of any system as its technically infeasible. Self-canceling turn signals are a safety net when the rider forgets to manually cancel, so the rider doesn't drive ten miles further with the signal blinking. With this lowered requirement bar, they're a valuable safety feature with almost no downside.

Being old and of feeble mind, I sometimes find I have gone miles after a turn, and there still blinking. This old guy needs all the help he can get to navigate safely in this dangerous world.

Re: Gear Indicator on '14?

I get my '14 next week. That's nice to hear about the 4 ways. I have bikes both with and without self cancelliing turn signals. I really don't notice much difference after 5 minutes on any bike. Without the self cancelling ts I tend to leave my thumb on or near the switch until I turn them off, as sort of a reminder to myself. With self cancelling ts I always look at the dash to make sure they're off!
