I was riding my wife's new '15 non-ES last night. Was romping it through the gears and seemed to hit a wall at 117ish mph.

Is it electronically limited or aerodynamically limited?

No wind, flat road, 80 degree ambient air temp, no bags, 100% stock bike running 92 octane fuel.

Early in the US models we had a number of threads about top speed and what you saw with your more accurate Gen2 speedo is not that far off. Mine seemed to lose acceleration from about there and crawled to something near what Copb8 just wrote.

My 2012 ran about 140 mph by GPS (stripped down, slight tail wind and slight down grade). My 2014 ES hasn't seen much over 100 mph as yet. Let me get a few more miles on her and then we shall see..... ::019:: the 2014 is quicker out of the hole though, I don't think it has the top end that my 2012 had. With a little work, it might make a decent track bike.....

Oh crap. This is definitely a challenge I do not need. Riding across Nebraska on I-80 on the 18th, Des Moines to Denver. Guess somewhere when I am nowhere, will have to see what it is with my trusty Garmin 665 the judge on my 2014 ES.

If I end up in jail, will the group help with the bail? I really want to ride with the crazy Denver folks on the 19th!

I think I agree with you,

Agree with you, my 2010 wasnt slow, I once did 217 km/hr on the GPS and 210 km/hr wasnt difficult to see on the GPS, all that was done to the bike was air screw adjustment, Akaprovic muffler and the Cat was removed.

My 2014 struggle to see 205 km/hr on the GPS , with std exhuast but with the Cat removed, but as you said out of the block the Gen 2 ES is faster.

Maybe my 2010 was just one of "those" bikes.

Air is always the top factor . Pushing more air need more HP . The difference between my stock wind screen and my taller one is pretty apparent .

About 115 mph on my GPS was about all my 2012 had, more then enough for me.
That's not a space I ride in but 85 mph is a must. At 80-85 fuel consumption was down and oil consumption was up.

Top speed is a combination of factors, and one of the biggest is how the designers think the owner wants the vehicle to be used. They are juggling combinations of usble power, gear ratios, GVW, fuel consumption, etc.

There are a couple of adventure bikes with lots of hp which the designers oriented toward top speed, and which would be miserable at picking through a stream bed of rocks while slipping the clutch near idle rpm. When Yamaha added the 2hp to the Gen2 bikes they had the opportunity to instead make a peaky high hp bike and chose not to.

Max speed is not about hp. There's a whole class of racing based in original 36 hp VWs which get up to roughly 80 mph and the 50cc speed record was over 130 mph the last I heard. Here is a contemporary light airplane with a 100 hp engine which is claimed to reach 155 kt (178 mph) in level flight. Top speed is not about frontal area, as thus plane also has more frontal area than our motorcycles.

Does it realy matter if the S10 do 210 km/hr or 250 km/hr, NO, I didnt bought the bike for a top speed over 200 km/hr, there are plenty road bikes that can do that and if I wanted to travel tar roads I would have bought one.

For me the HP an top speed is perfect for what I use the bike for and for what it is design for, gear ratio is perfect for gravel roads and touring all the back roads. So I'm still happy with my S10 althoug I think my 2014 is a bit slower than my previous 2010 top end, but my 2010 had 46 000 km on and my 2014 only have 15 000 km so maybe the 14 just need to be loosen up a bit more.

I have only done 2000 mls so I suspect the engine may be a bit tight. I've seen 120/121 mph on a few occasions, it's enough to get my driving licence suspended and a very large fine. I didn't buy this bike for it's top speed potential, it was because it's a reliable, comfortable versatile motorcycle. It will cruise all day at 90 mph traffic and cops allowing, and show it a twisting bumpy road it will deal with it very capably. If I was concerned about absolute power/top speed I probably would have bought a new Multistrada or BMW s1000xr.
