Gen 1 CCT and clutch basket, how long does it last?

Dear friends,

My mechanic recommended me to change my CCT back in August, as there was some engine ticking. I've since realized that this ticking is normal on the S10, and changing the CCT did nothing. The bike had 40.000 Km when changed, ie. 26k miles. Unfortunately, it seems that we ordered a gen1 CCT rather than a Gen2, which is quite disappointing. How long can I leave it in, safely, before I should replace it?

Second question: At the moment, I don't think I am having any 3k rpm vibration that I have seen mentioned from others. However, I am interested in doing the Gen2 basket replacement if it becomes a problem. At what milage can I expect this to be a necessity?

Thanks a lot.

Hello,

1) The Gen I might work out for 10Km or 100K Km... There is no "set" time or distance. The stock units from Yamaha are hydraulic units. If you begin to hear an issue it would be right at start up. It would clack pretty loud for 1-2-3 seconds. This is the sign it's TIME to change it. I might suggest a manual so you can move on from any further future issues. (I always suggest the Graves, if you can get one in your country)

2) Typically the Gen I basket is an issue basically from new. If you (someone) have the 3K RPM vibration you will always have it until changed. In my experience, if you're one of the few that dont have the vibration after 26K Miles, you "probably" will never have it. If you find that you do have the vibration and you want to change out the basket, it's relatively easy to do. (note) these baskets will last the life of the bike. Ive seen 6-10 bikes with 150K miles and the basket does not have that much wear. In theory it would last for 300K + miles. So it's not going to wear out for you you then to change it to the new one. (From my experience)

Are you definite that the CCT is a Gen1 part, as it was upgraded a few years back and you’d have to be very unlucky to pick up old stock. Have a look through the frame rail at the CCT face, 23P is Gen1, 2BS is Gen2.
As for the clutch basket, mine was fine at 3k miles, awful by 10k miles. Other owners never had an issue with it. If yours vibrates, it won’t fail, it just becomes an irritation, which takes the joy out of riding the bike.

I bought my ’12 Super Ten just this past August and a month later a GEN2 basket came up for sale here on the forum. I bought it immediately and had it in my hands a few days later.
My bike had a noticeable vibe around 3K revs and the GEN2 basket did reduce that in addition to quieting some of the mechanical noise typical of these engines (I’m still getting used to that!).
The GEN2 basket came with ALL the clutch plates, had 40K miles on it, looked like NEW and everything was in spec so everything was installed.
Even my GEN1 items, with 81K miles, looked great but the damper springs in the basket are very loose whereas the GEN2 basket has no springs.
I have an 11 sec video showing how loose the springs are but it’s nearly 20MB so I thought it best not to attach it…
Regards,
Mr. BR

Thank you, guys, for all this great information! I am going to look into whether or not it was really a gen1 CCT replacement -- but it wouldn't surprise me, as this is a 3rd world country. I am sure they have a lot of rotten parts lying around here to sell for full price. Hopefully I got lucky, but it looked (for what it's worth) identifical to the old one.

Guess I'll upgrade to a grave's manual one, regardless, when we do the valve exam.

Hi. I have just installed a new OEM CCT. Part number 2BS 122 100 200. It is the latest updated part number. Can someone tell me what the numbers 22 07 28 in CCT mean?
I think the time of manufacture, year-month-day??

I don’t think you can buy a Gen1 CCT anymore, it was superseded in the parts fiche with the gen2 part for all years of the Super Ténéré. This happened way back in 2014. Dealers almost never stock parts these days so it’d be unusual if your dealer had an old stock gen1 on his shelf.

My 2013 Tenere had 50,000 miles and the cam chain tensioner and the clutch both still seemed to be working fine when I traded it in on a brand-new 2018.

Thanks for all these helpful comments!

Indeed, the shop confirmed that it was a 2nd gen CCT I received :D

Regarding the clutch basket, I am happy to hear that - maybe - I am one of the lucky ones who does not have this problem.
Could it still be worthwhile to place a Barrett pressure plate in there, or won't it make a difference?

If you're tough on your clutch a Barnett could be a good thing. A Barnett pressure plate took my Royal Star through 110,000 miles on original disks.

I changed my clutch basket to the 14 model just because I wanted to try it. I am so glad I did. Nothing was wrong with the original one other than a iffy design I suppose. Mine was pretty smooth but not great by any means. Certain rpms it would shake and cause the motor to struggle. In my case the bike ran a lot better with the newer clutch basket. I do have to slip this clutch more than any other bike I have ever owned. Street bike that is. I figured it would have problems but seems to be holding up well. I did have to change the timing chain tensioner pretty early in its life. I am thinking the bike was only around 20,000 + miles but I would have to check on that. It was not far from that mileage. It would throw big nasty fits on start up and scared the poo out of me. I just put in the 14 model tensioner as well. It has been perfectly fine ever since. I thought it was bad I had to replace that but other than that and the first set of fork seals the bike has been rock solid reliable. I love that!

Thanks guys. I'll probably upgrade to a manual Grave's CCT and the Gen2 clutch basket at some point. For now, though, it seems fine. Will spend the money on upgrading my suspension instead
