Re: Melted Dash

Using a tinted screen should prevent this happening.

Maybe some of that stick on film that car owners use would work.

Re: Melted Dash

My Zero Gravity Touring WS on my Ninja 650 did this. The dash is warped all over this bar that goes across the center of the assembly. The tach meter background, that paper thing that shows the numbers, is starting to get transluscent at certain section and bunching at others. The needle still works but it's pretty messed up.

Unlike the S10, you can't buy a new cover for it and you need to pay for a full unit which costs $650. I'll just let its new owner deal with it.

Gauge cluster melting

Another victim of the sun hitting my v-stream windshield to have lazer magnifying lens affect!
Must be karma from all the ants I melted as a kid with a magnifying glass!

Thank goodness you can buy just the outer piece!
I was very stumped by this and really got to me after chasing down a simple fix for an oil leak if y'all read my other thread!
Went riding and notice this and it wasn't there the day before! There was no heat coming out of the cluster and I kept searching my mind for what possibly could have happened... Then I did a search here and quickly found the problem! Did not want to post on an old thread. Right now I just got a t-shirt over the windshield like what other people do and probably will eventually tint the bottom part of the windshield. Kind of stinks because this takes money away from my next Farkle purchase which was going to be a madstad bracket.
The struggle is real! 8)

Re: Gauge cluster melting

My 2013 with a Vstream did the exact same thing. I watched for it and caught it early. I just kept a rag on the instruments when parked. The Vstream was good enough to keep.

Re: Gauge cluster melting

I have had the same issue with a parabellum windshield. Actually melted the tail end of the tach needle. Luckily did not effect the accuracy any. Now I try to make a point of covering the dash when parking in the sun and I sometimes cover the windshield with my riding jacket. ::021::

Re: Gauge cluster melting

Same with Yam touring screen. previous S10 never had the issue even though the screen is a transfer and my parking spot at work was the same. Three years sitting in the same spot with varying screen angles from my adjustable bracket and nothing. Got a holdover white, same bracket, same shield and same parking spot gave me scars two days in a row. I've always parked facing directly away from the rising sun. Switched to the bike now facing the rising sun and no scar since.

But bought it to ride it so not worried. when I trade or sale i'll by parts to replace the scarred parts.

Is this also an issue for the stock Yamaha screen? If so I have a new reason for not keeping mine clean. I never look through it anyway and find it helps reduce glare some if dirty. Actually it's cleaner in photo than at times, all the bugs got washed off riding in the rain. I see people drapping their jacket over the windshield but I never do that as will get my jacket dirty. Lol

Reviving an old thread......

I bought a 2015 S10 and installed a tall VStream windshield on it. At some point on a recent trip to Idaho, Montana, and Utah my dash sustained some light melting damage to the gauge surround near the left turn signal indicators. I will be placing a tshirt over the windshield in the future-----the same thing I did for my Honda ST1300.

Re: Melted Dash

??? I've had my bike, ST 1300, in the sun long enough to get the clutch/brake levers so hot that I could hardly touch them....but you're telling me that my dash screen could actually melt/warp?! ??? And this is happening in states that are not generally considered as hot? ??? This is Texas, now I'm paranoid about parking in the sun, that shine's almost every day.

Be afraid......very afraid. My first had a big melt, burn mark from the stock windshield.

The VStrom in our garage has warped dash plastic. It's very common on the Stroms and it's pretty common on other bikes with windshields. You can park north/east/west so the sun isn't coming through the windshield to hit the dash, put a glove or something on the instrument cluster, or cover the windshield.

Usually on the Tenere and others it's just minor warping, but this extreme example is a BMW 700GS:

Has anyone here had any problems with sun causing damage to the Tenere gauge cluster ?
The reason I’m asking is because on the Revzilla site there’s a guy that says after installing an aftermarket windshield on his Tenere his gauges got ruined from the sun.

Acts magnifying glass under the sun, melts your instrument panel on the top.
I was excited to install this screen on my 2013 XTZ 1200 Tenere, but turned out to be disappointed when after a few week, found out it acts like a magnifying glass under the sun (the radius of the shield) and when you park your bike it melts the top of your instrument cluster and the cover front of it. (250-300$ damage) .Now i have a 200$ dollar shield sitting in my garage and a damaged bike. National cycle should have put some black shading (coating ) on the bottom half of the screen to prevent the sun going through it

It happened to me once, a couple years ago. The right side gauges turned black, if I recall correctly. The bike had been parked in a parking lot in the bright sun, right in front of a retro 50's chrome plated diner. After a few hours, the gauges returned to normal. It's never happened again, and the gauges work properly. That was with an OEM windshield.

It's been mentioned a few times over the years. Most if not all that I remember were GEN1 bikes with aftermarket shields, but I'm sure it could happen to stock bikes too.

My 2015 S10 gauges went black in 104 degree heat and sun in August last year, during a ride through Idaho. The gauges returned to normal when I got out of the sun. No other problems. I figure the heat was just too much for the display, but can't believe it was due to a windshield problem. I have the stock windshield.

My 2015 S10 received damage from the windshield ..... the top of the gauge surround was slightly melted on the top left of the gauges. I am using a V Stream tall shield and now cover the dash when parked outside.

A few weeks after I got my then new 2017, it was parked in the sun for 30 min. (the sun came from behind, not through the windshield).
And when I startet again the right side dash, was darker than the left side....and from new they was the same. Never returned to same as right side, so right side still darker than left.
I did asked about this, here on forum when it happend. And the answer was that it is "normal" that the right side gets darker.... 2 seperate screens, and not same type..
But for me, it was the sun that caused it to happen....
