Is this common? Shows flashing "E" and only takes 4.5 gallons. Thoughts?
Where are you located? This could be confusing for some people as a US gallon is different from an imperial gallon.
If I get mine down to E & ride a bit further, it’ll take 4.5 gallons or 18 litres. Reserve is 3.5 litres.

Same problem, I keep a trip meter this helps me Gauge it. But it is not fool proof. Winter gas causes mpg to dip. And if I am on the highway going 75 mph or faster it also dips. That is how I ran out once. Hauling ass and winter gas. One way I have come up with to foolproof is to monitor my mpg on my screen. But you have to reset it at every fill up. If I average 40 mpg or better then 230 miles is a safe margin.

Our bikes seem to get great mileage in the twistiest and does no care if you are giving the beans. The inverse seems to hold true for our modern bmw boxer friends.

I have done that. Upon filling up I discovered I had a gallon to a gallon and a half left. Sometimes 3/4 to 1/2. Looking for more precision.

Once your gas goes down to a certain level. A mile count down starts. I use to go for 20 to 50 miles after it reached 0. And still had .5 to .75 of a gallon.

Welcome, from down 1-35W in Texas. Yeah, sounds about right for the fuel gauge. I kinda keep an eye on the gauge, but I generally use my odometer. I usually fill up at about 200mi, and put in 5usg.

When you ride to E, a new trip counter will appear and start counting up from zero. Ride that forty miles and you'll utilize a lot more of the tank.
You get 40 miles out of reserve? I’ve never been game to take it any further than 25.

Rounding down to 6gal in the tank, multiplying by 40mpg gives a very pessimistic 240mi range. (I really don't want to have to push the big girl) I've taken mine to 230mi and only put in 5.3gal(US). That all being said, everything has to be taken into consideration; your speed, wind speed, direction of wind, loaded/unloaded, etc.

Never understood the logic of it counting UP.....will it go 30 miles? 50? 67.5? Who the hell knows! I would prefer it count DOWN so that I know how many miles until I have to start walking. (I'm just silly like that....)
