Fog or driving auxiliary lights?

Hello,

PIAA has a Lp530 driving auxiliary leds kit for ST.

However Yamaha sells the OEM PIAA kit but only with the fog auxiliary lights: https://www.yamaha-motor.eu/ie/products/motorcycles/adventure/xt1200ze-super-tenere.aspx?view=accessories&partcode=23P-854A3-00-00&year=2017

What you think that works better and/or seems to be most useful: fog or driving lights?

If will be the fog, since the Yamaha kit is much expensive I'm thinking to buy this one:https://www.amazon.com/gp/aw/d/B00544ZBEM/ref=mp_s_a_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1479129493&sr=8-3&pi=SY200_QL40&keywords=piaa+lp530+fog&dpPl=1&dpID=51Z2wVFMfQL&ref=plSrch

Thanks
Duarte S.

My first S10 was an ex demo and it came with the Yam spotlights already fitted. When I Part exed that bike the spots were transferred to the replacement. I have used them about 3 times in 5 years of S10 ownership!!!!! I only use them when riding on unlit roads in the dark and I don't like riding in the dark! I find the Yam headlight to be reasonable on its own and the Yam spots do not seem to make that much difference in their present location.

I also transferred the crashbars and the Givi Trekker lights to my new bike. I use these as driving lights and are left on all the time. Never had any problems with the police with this when riding in the UK and Europe C:). Of Course you could mount the Yam lights on crashbars but I think that there are better and cheaper alternatives out there now than both the Yam spots and the Givi Trekkers. The Yam spots cost more than the crashbars and Givi spots combined!!!!!

Yes, but these are not plug and play. You will need connectors and/or pins from Eastern Beaver to plug directly into the Yamaha connectors for the aux lights.

The OEM Yamaha kit is H7 Halogen bulbs, not LED. Same profile and mounting location, but these are different lights, though PIAA claims similar light patterns.

What you think that works better and/or seems to be most useful: fog or driving lights?
Do you want to be seen better, or to see better? How are you going to use the lights? If you want to be seen, go with the fogs. If you want more light farther out than your headlights, go with the driving pattern.

I run a DOT legal low beam fog that casts a wide beam side to side but doesn't put light out any farther than my headlights. This does a very good job of filling in the mid area closer to the bike and also spreading light ditch to ditch, which helps in turns when the bike is leaned over. I also run two 10º spot LED lights for punching light farther out than my high beams when I need to see better at night at highway speeds. These can only be used on empty roads or they will blind traffic. The low beam fog can be used in traffic w/o blinding drivers.

Those are the LED versions and are not bad lights, but still way over priced for a pair or LED fog lights. Look at www.ledrider.com and similar lights on Amazon or ebay.

I think the oem H7 kit is wired to only be on with high beams, but can't recall for sure. You might want to check that before you decide how to wire your lights. Some prefer this feature, others do not. My spots are wired this way so they go off when I dip the lights for on coming traffic, but the fog is independent and can be left on all the time since it does not blind traffic due to the sharp cut off of the beam.

Hope that helps.

Maybe. Buyer beware. Yamaha dealers in the US have been selling Yamaha kits for the Super Tenere with PIAA LED fog lights, but the kit was not plug and play and didn't have oem connectors. The link to the LED lights says LED, but the pictures are of a H7 kit when you click on the kit picture and zoom in.
