Nothing wrong with either v-stroms. Great bikes. but they not overly exciting, or cutting edge.
granted the ST is getting on close to 5 yrs old now, but I would not trade mine in.

Having logged some k's on a dl1000, and only a handful on a dl650, the tenere would be a clear choice.

Fjr? never owned one, but put some time in on a st1300. Great bike, but damn heavy, and hot.
Tenere does it all.

I'll keep this short; I've owned all 3:

Vstrom: an upscale KLR.. never grew to like it.
'13 Gen 3 FJR: a competent touring appliance, with no character. It goes like stink even when you're not trying to.
'12 SuperTen: Bought it without test riding it, after finally getting rid of my GS. The love affair was slow and steady and it gradually grew into my favorite bike of all time, and I've owned more bikes than I can recall. I like the character of the engine, very punchy and torquey. I like everything about the bike: comfort, ergonomics, handling on and off road, easy access to the electrics behind the right side panel, the long long valve check interval, and the overall reliability of the power train, drive shaft and final drive.

The '13 FJR and '12 SuperTen are going bye bye and I'm saying hello to a '14 SuperTen in April. I have a signed deal... ::022::

Just traded my 2006 WeeStrom after 75,000 for a 2012 S10 which I have only put 500 miles on since I got last Tuesday. I also have a 2005 FJR which I have had for about 70,000 miles also.

I look at the Super Tenere as a more comfortable, much more refined, stronger and somewhat heavier than the VStrom. I loved the Wee but the additional power, comfort and stability at speed of the Super Tenere is very much appreciated. Despite weighing more than the DL650 I feel that the Center of Balance is much lower and allows for easier and tighter U-Turns. The only place I find the weight an issue is pushing the Tenere around the Garage. Other than that I think it rides and handles as easy (if not easier) the WeeStrom --- ::021::r with a bunch more horsepower, traction control and no chain maintenance.
As a caveat 95% of my riding is road.

The FJR and Super Tenere are contrasted rather than compared. The FJR is Rocket Fast, but in return you are in a much more compact seating position, you are riding a 100lb heavier bike (and below 60 you feel everybit of that weight); plus you are riding a much hotter bike. The FJR puts out same major heat. I am probably going to sell my FJR for just that reason. I (and probably anybody else over 5'10") will find it easy to ride the S10 all day in comfort. Even without highway pegs. The FJR, while w/o question a much faster bike, requires anybody with a longer leg to start making a lot of modification if you are doing long 400 mile days or even a saddlesore 1000. I had to put highway pegs, peg lowerers, RDL seat, and bar risers to make the FJR tolerable for all day and continuous multi-day 300 - 350 day rides.

Unless I am having a day in which I want to just really push it ... the S10 is better in every way but flat out speed. The DL650 is also all day comfortable , but just don't plan on keeping up with "COMPETENT" riders on FJR's., 'busa's, cbr1000 etc/ But outside of that the S10 will stay up just fine and you'll be much, much more comfortable. Plus with all that plastic it takes for ever to clean the FJR. And moving it around the garage is hard on those of us with bad parts.

Hope this helps. The one thing I don't know is trouble free longevity with the Super Tenere. The FJR just runs, and runs and runs. The Wee Strom is the same. Just keep up with chain maintenance and oil changes.

@ SAL : if you've read anything about the Supa10 you've read how this iron is almost maintenance free.
26K valve check
etc....
Get a Parabellum screen fitted with the WASP adjuster
Get the Yammy wings
Get a set of Jesse's
Recover the saddle with a less grippy material
Ride...

Hey Toto, I had a 2009 Moto Guzzi Stelvio. It was fine for a few years, but then it started breaking down with electrical problems. The dealer network for Guzzi is very thin. I decided to go for Yamaha reliability and have not regretted it. My Super Ten is a fantastic bike. I put an Akrapovic pipe on it, and it sounds really sweet without being obnoxiously loud. The pipe itself is a work of art. Just beautiful.
The V-Strom is a fine machine too, but for me the chain would be a deal breaker. Others may disagree, but I am sold on shaft drive.

Cheers,

Bruce

Hi BB

Ya , I was looking at the NTX, lovely bike, but I followed a trip thread on ADV done by a fella with a new 12 or 13 NTX.
All kinds of electrical problems. I think he is now looking at the new Strom...not sure.
I sat on one at the bike show and at certain positions my left knee would hit the head, although I must admit I tried.
Truly a beauty...just too bad about some of the issues, coupled with a very thin dealer network...I have to pass.

Went to the Yammy dealer today and sat on a 2013 S10.
Very comfy, much more so then FJR.
This is a demo and when the snow clears he said come back and ride the FJR(2012 trade in) and S10 back to back.
I WILL take him up on that offer.
Don't know if this is the same bike, there is gray 2013 demo at Oakville Yamaha with 600km for a good price, I think it has all of the extras Altrider makes for the Tenere.
I bought A blue T. there.

I know how he feels.. I have a 09 Norge with 25k on it...Love that bike wouldn't sell it, but heading more than 200 miles from home makes me uneasy....
and that is why there is a new S10 and not a NTX in my stable...

Yea I believe that is one of the ones I sat on...had BIG panniers on it.
I believe he would take 15K for it with the panniers.
Still to much as a I can get the 2014 with the cruise I really want, plus clutch and fueling fix.
No panniers, but the ones on the demo are way to big for my liking.
Will see if it ever warms up. Gotta look at the new Vee...much cheaper and it would do the job for me regardless of no CC.
Don't mine spending a couple of more K for the 2014 S10, but no more considering no panies like the Strom.
Will be an interesting spring.

hannebone:

I guess I sort of walked into a good 2012 with most that on.
Madstadt Bracket, Madstadt Screen (same as on my WeeStrom),
Heated Sargent Seat (that is rather novel to me ... I've never had Motorcycle with Heated seats. I find it rather nice.,
Yammi Wings ... took on and off just to try it. They're staying on.
Stock Yammi Bags though. (Trying to decide weather to keep or try to sell or trade for Jesse's). Those Jesse's sure are nice.

Next thing is getting a Rostra Cruise Control and putting my S10. I have the Audiovox CC on the FJR and absolutely love it. I can't imagine doing any Saddlesore's with out one. They're just phenomenal "wrists breaks".
