If you ever have the tank up, there was a post a couple of years ago about a rub spot on the bottom of the tank getting rusty.

The spokes corrode too.

I must be blind cause I found rust on the right side too, a smaller patch. Nevertheless, sand down the rust, painted black 4 layers, and added anti-rust before rubber capping it off.

I recently found some around the welds of the right footpeg bracket.

Cleaned it up with wire brush, primer, and two coats of flat black.

I have 2013 Tenere with only 3000 miles and has always been kept in garage. I have noticed several rust spots, especially on kick and center stand. Never had a bike that's has so much rust.

As long as it is just surface rust, not that big of a problem. metal brush and any type of anti rust paint and you are good to go.

Found rust on my 2015, kept in garage, never ridden on salted roads, 3920 miles, this picture was after I wirebrushed it:

Found a smaller bit of rust in the same location on the other side.

With modern painting techniques, I think Yamaha can do better.

Re: First rust found-suggested fix

If you only have access to rattle cans, I strongly suggest using appliance epoxy. In rattle cans it is not a true epoxy amide but an epoxy ester which is still infinitely better than the usual alkyd enamels you find in most rattles.

Be sure area is sanded to BRIGHT metal before painting. Apply multiple coats-the more the better. Weather dependent, It will take up to a week to fully cure but should be handle able in a few hours.

If you do not like the shade of black, wait until it is fully cured, lightly sand and top coat with your favorite black enamel

You can find it at any Big Orange Box or Big Gray Box

Is spots of rust, particularly those hidden under a rubber cover really something to worry about? I have a 1997 Ford F350 and the whole roof is surface rust. I figure just a cosmetic issue which I don't care about.
