I dunno.

2. Do not overfill the fuel tank. When refueling, be sure to insert the pump nozzle into the fuel tank filler hole. Stop filling when the fuel
reaches the bottom of the filler tube. Because fuel expands when it heats up, heat from the engine or the sun can cause fuel to spill out of the fuel tank.

Maybe it is nothing more that a fuel level guide. You can also hook the nozzle in there if you wanted to, but it doesn't take long to fill it so I don't. Beats me. Back in the old days, when non-leaded vehicles were just coming out, they started adding those to vehicles to force you to use the nozzle with the small diameter (unleaded) instead of the fat boy. Gasolinr expands with heat whether it comes from the engine or the sun. Top off your tank, let it sit in the sun and watch teh over flow tube. In California it would drain into a carbon filled filter (emmissions). The same filter that DL1000's have and if it was saturated the engine would run poorly for 25+ miles until the filter dried. No harm, just a PITA.

My guess on the plate thingy is that it is to help prevent you from filling up with diesel when you are really tired or distracted. :D

I do find that the plate kind of gets in the way when filling on the centerstand.
