I just loaded up with 4.395 US gal and I rode the bike up to 12 miles on the F trip meter before filling. I thought I would have pumped more in. Just wondering seems like a small amount for a six gal tank.

Yeah... me too... I drove 8 kms on reserve and upon fillup, I could put in a bit over 16 litres.. I was under the impression that reserve was only to be about 4 litres, not the 7 litres. With about 7 litres of reserve, I should be able to ride about 100 - 130 kms on reserve before the tank runs dry.

Yamaha (and the mfgs in general) are usually a little conservative on reserve fuel - if they say it is 1 gal, you'll usually get the low-fuel warning light with 1.2 gal left, or something like this. But 75% more than stated reserve would be unusual.

Of course, the calculated reserve is influenced by how full you get the tank. To make sure you don't pump fuel into the tank vent (which can screw up the charcoal canister on CA models), there is a standpipe in the filler and you're supposed to not fuel above this, although it is commonly done. It might be possible you're being overly conservative in how full you try and get the tank.

It's possible the float sender is miscalibrated. It appears to be a simple variable resistor, probably integrated into the fuel pump assembly. If this were the case, I would think this would also cause the fuel gage to be pessimistic, possibly not even registering a full tank after a fullup.

I'm having to get used to the fact that when the flashing E comes on, you have about 70 miles left, 50 for sure. I filled at 255 on my last tank, flashing E came on about 220, took 5 gallons. This bike is gonna travel! ??? ;D

Mine and several others also are taking 4.5 gallons when the light starts flashing, leaving 1.5 gallons if the 6 total is correct.

I had a 380 mile ride earlier this week and filled the tank at 230 miles. At that time, I was 31.8 miles on the F trip and the bike took 5.3 gallons. Mileage is bopping around 45 mpg. Unless I start seeing some better numbers in the mpg, I probably won’t let the F trip go past 50. Otherwise, I might be deploying my AMA Roadside Service Card.

good to know, I hit the F trip and panicked at 15, then upon filling it laughed. had a gallon left. I will try a dry run sometime, with of course fuel on board.

Gotta cast my mind back but I'm pretty sure that I've seen 240miles from a tank ... I can't check my receipts as I run too many bikes and I don't know which ticket is for which bike. Yep I'm that anal that I keep my fuel tickets ... for while anyway. ::)

On the break-in trtip back from Texas last Thursday and Friday, my fill ups were all between 225 and 255 miles, and were for 4.6 - 5.3 gallons.

Commuting here in the DC area, MPG is coming in right around 48, though I did see 51 on my last fillup. After several fairly scientific (fill all the way up and ride non-stop, note mileage, and repeat) checks, I find that the bike's MPG calculator is off by about 2-3 mpg.

Sorry, should have mentioned that all my fill ups are on the centerstand.

has anyone figured out how much of the stated 6.08 US gallon capacity is "useable"?

The specs are supposed to reflect usable capacity, not total, so if you believe Yamaha, all of it. But you'll never know for sure on your particular bike without running it out.

FWIW running completely out of fuel is not good for the fuel cooled fuel pump. Once might not be fatal but continually doing it will not fair well for the life of the pump.

I agree the low light and trip F does come on a little early so I just factor that into my remaining range. That is of course based on the tank being an actual 6.08 gallons, does anyone know for sure if it is or not?

Well, I ran mine out of gas on the way up to Sturgis a couple of weeks ago. ::) I knew it was getting close but about 8 miles out of town it started to sputter. I immediately pulled over as to not run the injectors clear out of fuel. I pulled out my trusty MRS fuel bottle  and poured in the approx. 1 quart of gas. Rode on into town and was only able to put in 5.6 gals. I fill up on the center stand and stop fueling when the fuel reaches the plate with the holes in the filler neck. I'm not sure if you can fill it above that plate or not, I haven't.
So I have not been able to get 6 gallons out of mine yet.

To get 6 gallons in you will need to sit on the bike and keep filling until the fuel is at the rim of the tank. I never get off a bike to re-fuel, I always sit on it and fill above that stupid metal plate unless I am headed somewhere close and the bike will be sitting.

Which reminds me of a question I have... That stupid metal plate. The V-Strom I rode in the UK had a plate like that too. I'd never seen anything like that before but the friend who loaned me the bike said they all had 'em over there. He didn't know why; it was just normal to him. My Super10 is the first US bike I have ever seen that has one.

What is the purpose of that plate?
