Is the final drive in the ST the same drive that is in the FJR and the shaft driven cruisers? I ordered a new seal for my bike as a spare and noticed that the part number is the same for all Yamaha shaft driven bikes I realize that does not mean the internal parts are the same( but are they?) ........for that matter is the final drive in a RT the same as the GS?

not sure.
but before you start ordering more seals. Check your inner right swing arm plug is glued in place. Those fall out easy and eventually bugger up the seals on the shaft

I was hypothesizing a while back that the different ratios in the Royal, V-Max and now the FJR? might be useable in some way. Strange though, I like the ratios as they are, haven't felt the need to swap like I did on the Royal. A improvement in low end grunt might be nice, but the loss at the high end might not be so nice.

My experience too. At first, I thought the Tenere was geared way too high. I still think first gear should be lower because I do trail ride this thing. But then I get on the freeway and cruise with traffic at 75-80 mph, so 6th gear is fine. Therefore, a final drive change would just be a compromise in one direction. A lower first and maybe even second gear would make this beast a little more trail worthy, but getting into the transmission is far more complicated. I'm not going there.

What I have really learned is that this bike will tractor along quite well - low speeds over rough terrain, very torquey at low RPM. The turbo prop radiator fan is your friend.
