Hi

I have a weird clunking sound coming from below my bike that has got worse since last month . It is directly related to road imperfections when the shift lever is pressed, but doesn't seem to be related to clutch plates (shifting is normal), more like final drive (universal joint??) or middle gear.

Did any of you had the same problem??

I'm taking the bike next wednesday to the Service Shop to be checked, but I'd prefer going with some information.

Cheers

JC

Hi JC, and welcome...

Not something silly, like a flapping centerstand or sidestand is it?

Hello JC, like dcstrom said, it could be the center stand, maybe you lost a rubber and the stand is clanging, metal on metal.

let us know what it was..

I don't think it is related to the center stand, because it only happens when I have the shift lever pressed. Yesterday I checked the universal joint inside the rubber protection and couldn't see anything wrong. also checked the final drive oil level, and seemed to be fine.

Can you ride over road imperfections and still here the noise without using the shift lever? That is where I got messed up on the first post.

Have you looked for loose bolts or nuts. Maybe engine mounts? It just seems strange that it happens with a rough road and when shifting.

First, i have never ridden off road (not even light off road, only tarmac), so i guess EJV solution doesn't apply here. As I said, sound is more like a cluncking than a hissing, similar to a centerstand without rubber protection, but it appears only when i keep the shift lever pressed and ride over road imperfections (no traction to final drive or middle gear) and also when I ride (with traction and some speed) over big rode bumps (the ones we have to stop cars, don't know the english term). Here a photo of the bumps i'm talking about

Summarizing, the sound only comes when the final drive oscillate hard (with or without the shift lever pressed) or soft (with shift lever pressed)

Sorry for my english, i'm trying to improve it.

Cheers

At every point that the torque changes direction through gearing there is a small bit of slop. Going over speed bumps and what-not, the wheel speed/torque changes abruptly and causes some noise on the front face to back face change on the gears. Even with the clutch lever disengaged there is still enough resistance in all the moving parts to have the slop taken out, back and forth.
Now then, it's getting louder you say. That's a tough one. All I could suggest is that you check your differential's fluid level. I've heard rumors of bikes arriving on our shores with very little to no fluid in the case.

Ok, I have my bike back. Guys at Yamaha Service told me that they checked the final drive completely and nothing was out of specs. They told me that they checked on other S10, and they sounded much worse than mine...I hope it's true (here in Chile, representatives are not always very honorable)...I heard the sound going over big road bumps, but small bumps didn't seemed to sound like before, which is good. I will keep checking after my vacations..

I asked them anyway to change final drive oil, and, they said it was quite black. And they checked front suspension and rims to tighen them (they were a little bit loose)

Cheers
