Hi, just got a new 2014 ES (loving it) been breaking it in only 300 miles on so far. I just got back from a 70 mile ride and was looking bike over and noticed that the FD was pretty warm it was so hot I had to pull my hand away after a few seconds . That didn't seem right I've rideen other FD bikes and never felt one that warm. I call dealer he says chk oil & only way to do that is drain it and measure it. The manual says to chk it pull filler plug & look in there ? I pull filler plug & don't see any oil so I drain it and there was exactly 200cc of oil in there. Dealer says it needs 300cc of oil manual says .2L which I think is 200cc. Anyway my question is how much oil should I put in there and I've got some bel-ray 80-90 I'd like to use. And do these FD units get real warm ?
Thanks in advance

The final drives get very hot.

I don't know the quantity; I believe the manual simply says to fill it with fluid until the fluid is level with the fill hole.

Normal.
Do a search for prior threads If you want more info, both here and on the FJR Forum.

Final drives run very warm, hot to the touch. Like SPX ^^^^ I fill mine up [on center stand] until it runs out the fill hole.

IIRC, oil capacity is a little over 6 OZ...I get 5+ changes from a quart of my favorite fluid!

Thanks guys I started reading some other posts here on the FD and it seems hot is normal . 200cc is correct amount. But some debate on what oil to to use , imagine that !

200cc is 200mils is 0.2l. All the same and the correct amount. As said above, like a car diff, drain on centre stand and fill till runs out and stops. Replace filler cap and ride on. I was also amazed as to how hot it gets but this is normal. Just don't wash it out with kero. Haha. Forum old joke. Cheers michael

After my bike had FD seal leaks (March and again in Nov), I began measuring 250ml of fluid rather than the fill till it runs out method. So far, no leaks. Could overfilling create pressure to cause premature seal failure? 200-250mls does not seem like very much lubrication for the pinion/ring gear but Mother Yamaha knows best. Glad it has been just seals and not the housing grenading itself spontaneously.

Have you, or anyone else reading this, measured how much fluid goes in when you use the "fill it until it runs out method?" I have not...

I guess the temp depends on how much oil is able to be in the FD. On my VZ1600 the fill hole was much higher (relatively) so would take much more oil and so never seemed to get 'hot', but did run warm. I also don't think there is pressure in there to build up, as there is a vent, could be wrong though?

As for temperature - yes it gets hot as there's a lot of friction in there (but not as hot as the engine oil).
As for final gear oil, stick to the manufacturer's recommendation - GL4 Hypoid Gear Oil and fill to the brim of the filling hole.

Yes it gets warm, first shaft drive I`ve had and I was surprised how hot it was after first few miles running in and figured it was wearing itself in, now it gets warm and bakes on any mud on the road :D

Although I don't officially "measure" the gear lube, I [magic] mark the quart container when I start and see approximately how much goes in...

Does zat count?
