My final drive started leaking from the aft end of the shaft at the weep hole. Cause is failed seal from a grooved bushing. Parts coming from Japan so I sit in Bangor Me. First problem in 36,000 mi.

My rear seal leaked for a day 5000km ago and stopped not a drop sense. I checked the vent when I checked the fluid level. Use a short piece of hose pressed against the filler hole. Blow gentle with your ear at the vent and your will hear the air exit the vent hole.

Bringing up an old thread because it showed up when I searched for my issue. I, too, have a leak coming out of the rear swingarm weep hole. And yes, it is a leak, not a few drops...the whole rear final drive area is covered with oil. The bike is less than a year old, just under 17k miles, and ridden almost exclusively on the street. I already had to replace a different seal on the final drive last fall (next to the wheel/hub) for a leak.

Hopefully I can find a dealer who will work on it. My purchasing dealer has been less than helpful- it took a 3 month battle for them to fix wheel damage, then when they did, they had the spokes so bad that two were rattling loose and the wheel had terrible runout. They have made it clear they don't want to warranty anything else on the bike since I do my own maintenance (oil changes, etc.) As an auto technician for ten years I'm quite qualified, but the dealer and Yamaha disagree.

I mocked the leak a few pages back.
This is what I got for that, :) :

Not bad for 58,000 miles.
Fix was easy. Oil seal and O ring. (The oil seal was leaking).

My 2012 with 22k hard miles has developed a rear diff leak. As shown with the pics there appears to be some assembly lube at the weep hole (I removed the diff and lubed the splines liberally 7k ago).

However the puddle in the truck and on the wheel is definitely hypoid gear oil leaking from the seal on the wheel side.

Any tips on replacement? I need to get the bike back together in 2 weeks for anther trip and it will be DIY.

Thanks in advance.

Andy

Actually mine appears to be the seal around the wheel drive. There is not hypoid gear oil coming out of the weep hole.

Looks the be a simple fix by removing the plate facing the wheel.
Well, that fixed the leak on the wheel side. About 5k later in the middle of the IDBDR last year the weep hole at the swingarm started to weep fluid.

Not happy about having to work on the rear end so much but the bike has been ridden hard in rough and dusty conditions and submerged countless times.
