Took the WRR out to the Wayahutta OHV area near Cullowhee, NC yesterday to ride with a crew of seasoned moto vets. In an effort to keep up I pushed beyond what my skill envelope and the conditions warranted. I took several big diggers - the first of which resulted in a significant knee bruise. I am sore but not severely injured. I had my summer weight Olympia mesh pants with knee armor in them on for the day. However, the way I went down rotated the pant and thus the armor around my knee so that the medial head of the tibia took the full force of a sliding impact on a rock. One of my riding buddies was wearing some fancy carbon fiber knee braces by EVS that he had since his moto days. They are way too much and way too expensive for what I need. A web exploration this morning, however, revealed these (link below) that might be a good - and far more affordable - option.

Does anybody have any experience with these specific knee guards - or anything similar from a different maker. I am not so much interested in the "brace" component of this purchase as I am in the impact protection.

Trike I bought some from Revzilla. Answer brand 15 dollars a set Velcro around leg and fit down in your boot. They cover your shin and patella. I didn't buy them cuz their cheap I bought them because my co worker who is my age and has raced for 30 years said that's all he wears. I thought if they are good enough for him they'll work for me. In pipestem campground now did 250 today. Rode thur Burkes garden. This area is amazing!

Trike, +1 what TrueGrip said. Lots of these on the market and if they are collected in the boot, tend to stay put when riding. I use the Asterisk braces when riding the WR/KTM but they are just too bulky when riding the S10 or dualsport days.

Wayahutta is fun and still some gravel roads in that area that are legal. Moses Creek to Old Bald is a fun ride. Tried Brown Mt yet?

I have a pair of similar looking, relativity inexpensive knee braces. I seldom wear them, as they are not that comfortable for long durations. If I were to enter a race, I might wear them. 99% of the time I wear the simple knee guards on the Tenere, or other dirt bikes. I don't care for the pads that are contained in pants, as they will easily rotate out of the way in a fall.

I wear the Pod K800 knee braces for offroad riding. They're light, unobtrusive and they protect against both impact and twisting. They aren't cheap but they're far less expensive than knee surgery. ;)
