For those hard core winter riders -
What's your favorite cold weather rainy winter riding jacket?

Without breaking the bank, of course!

This AlpineStars at $200 is nice and the Icon Patrol at $375, but I can't decide.

You know how those harsh 40 degree cold spells in California are rough.

Used a lot of gear over the years, but I keep coming back to the Aerostich stuff - both the Roadcrafter and Darien. I'm about to replace my 13-yo 2-piece Roadcrafter than has served me exceptionally well over tens and tens of thousands of miles, and while there is some great gear out there, I think I'll return to Aerostich.

And a plug for the company - this is an American company that has done a heck of a job providing a lot of folks a living wage in a tough area of the country. Andy Goldfine (the owner) has been forced to go overseas to some degree, but Roadcrafters and Dariens are still US made - one of a few apparel mfgs left in the US.

::026:: On the Aerostich gear. My Roadcrafter is over 13 years old and I figure it is good till the day I give up riding. I currently wear the Darien AD-1 which fit me better than the original Dariens. The AD-1 is NOT made in the US though.

MarkJenn, I totallly agree with you on the USA made gear. They have AWESOME customer service right to us, the end users, not some third party mail order catalog company!!! I like the waterproof single layer of fabric that is adhered to the outside material instead of multi-layers for wet protection. Just a simple wash and retreat for waterproofing once a year, and good to go. AeroSTich STuff is great and not the most expensive.

With 3 leather jackets, 2 mesh jackets, 1 textile jacket, and a rain jump suit -

And Yes, the Aerostich are very nice.
A simple rain jacket is what I want.

It's for the Sacramento Region, not Chicago ::025::

Not sure what you mean by simple. An Aerostich jacket is just a Cordura shell, Gore-Tex and padding. Cold?, add layers. Wet?, jacket works well. Hot? Wrong jacket for California.

IF by simple, you mean inexpensive, Aerostich won't work. Check out a Cycle Gear near you for ideas on rain jackets. Depending on your rain tolerance and riding distance, just get a jacket you like and treat it with Kiwi Camp-Dry.

I have the Olympia X Moto as well and love it. I am selling a nearly new Joe Rocket in the For Sale area if anyone is interested. Just PM me. Thanks.

I like the combo of attributes/colors.

There are many choices between $300 - $500.

But how many vents/zippers are on the Olympia X Moto?

Zippers = alot.

Vents = 6 all together. 2 huge ones on the front, 1 on each upper arm, and 2 on the back. What I like about these versus others is that they can be just a one zipper pull down type vent, or a full panel. The panels do tuck away nicely into the jacket and can be done with gear on (well, not the back ones unless you lack clavicles and are able to spin your cranium 180 degrees ??? )

H20 pack is small, but nice for short day trips. I find the shoulder straps can be in the way at times when trying to don/doff the jacket.

Not sure what I would put int eh left arm clear pouch. but it does have a waterproof zipper on it. Guess if I were to come across a football game, I can put my plays in there..... ::012::
