Extended warranty or not....

Like a broken record...

This was the first time I've ever bought an extended warranty for a vehicle. As mentioned, seemed silly to pass up 4 more years of coverage for only $379. (Nearby dealer was offering an eBay special) Most likely will be a waste of money. ::010::

Too cheap to not have. A bonus if you sell.

In my experience the warranty was absolutely worth it. And I am continuously impressed by how the Yamaha dealers I've dealt with are primarily focused on getting the bike back in good running order without any fuss.

Thanks for all the input. I bought the 4 year warranty yesterday from the deal posted in the vendor section. It was very easy and quick to do. I have peace of mind on yhe long trips.. I actually had till the 22nd of January. I guess my dealer started the warranty the day I picked it up not the bill of sale date.

Sorry guys, but this is the definitive word on this issue in my mind. Pure cred. Who could possibly know better?

Thanks man. For trying harder than anybody to break this thing.

I bought an extended warranty once on a truck and regretted it every single day until it ran out. What a waste of money. I never buy the extended warranty on anything. Outside of the warranty period if anything goes wrong, I fix it, I enjoy doing the work anyway.

Extended Warranty on a reliable, well built product, is a gamble with the house having incredible odds of winning.

I am not a gambling man, but I will watch other waste their hard earned money.

I do the same thing with insurance, maximum deductibles to save on cost. Insurance is also legalized gambling. I like my money in my savings accounts and retirement investments. Not a pure profit in the form of unused extended warranty.

I totally get your rational.
But, let me ask you, would you buy the 4 year Y.E.S. for 10 bucks?

I dont generally buy extended warrantis either...however two main factors influenced my decision to buy the YES warranty. First the price..for $100 a year... its cheap insurance....yes insurance...I live in a state that does not require auto insurance but I buy it anyway...because I can't afford to repair my car or pay for someone elses. Second....this is a complex bike....I can repair just about everything on my KLR....however with all the electronic systems and fuel injection etc. Its beyond my skill and equipment level to repair at home let alone out on the road.

It's the individuals call....I think I made the right one.
I avoid aftermarket warranties totally...those are a waist IMO

I just bought mine under the wire - my original was about to expire. Ha ha, typical procrastinator. As with others, I rarely buy extended warranties but it's a great deal. Heck you would easily get it back if you sell the bike.

For $10 sure... But at that price point it should be included with the bike to begin with.

Exactly!
In my mind, the price was so small, I just consider it included in the price of the bike.

It was even a single transaction. Didn't sting a bit.

My dealer wanted $1200 for the 4 year extended warranty, which I turned down. I later found it here for $100/year or $400 total for 4 years, although there was something about limited availability for WA state. That's still too much in my opinion for money that will very likely just be free money to Yamaha. $400 I could spend on gas, or camp sites, or farkles, or even a half month of daycare for my son.

My piece of mind comes from knowing I bought a reliable bike to begin with, in fact, Consumer Reports rated Yamaha as having the least number of problems of the motorcycle manufacturers they rated (which excluded Victory).

Now at $10/year, or even $25/year, that's an expendible amount of money I am willing to waste. $100/year, not so much. Daycare is $$ and every dollar counts these days.

My previous adventure bike was a A990... The mount of time I spent wrenching on that thing was unbelievable! So far the maintenance of he Tenere has been about 1/10th the amount of work. Makes me even happier keeping the money in my pocket.

I totally understand. And you are probably right in your prediction of it ending up as free money for Yamaha.

If so, I actually will celebrate. (the last day of the 5th year of ownership)

My problem is I was never a fan boy of Yamaha. (I completely admit to being one today) And even knowing what I know now, I can't believe I haven't broken this thing. It just seems like it has to break sooner or later. It's so BIG and HEAVY and hits things so hard. And I run it mercilessly daily. Down deep inside I can't believe it was expected to hold up to some of this.

But then I find others who push it far harder than I do and they haven't broken theirs either.

Yep. You are probably right. But I'm gonna give it effort to prove otherwise. :)

I was going to, bet then decided against, because I knew I was going to mod the hell out of it. I figured if I added the flash, exhaust, ride it off-road...etc, that it would just void the warranty.

The Super Tenere is my 10th Yamaha and they all have had the same positive traits concerning reliability and predictability. I banked on this and the fact that they were out in Europe for some time without any major issues, and I'm happy to report that this one has been no exception. It had a one year warranty anyway and I figured if it made it that far it's ok. 2-1/2 years and ZERO problems!

Coastie,

Did you buy in Florida or Texas? (Webster)
I don't think you've done anything to void your warranty. But it might help having your dealer vouch for you.
