Yesterday, after 9000 miles on the OEM tires, I spooned on two knobby tires to try in the sand. I live 25 miles from 1 million acres of state forest land. There are hundreds of miles of dirt roads, but there is also lots of sugar sand.
I'm running a Mitas E09 Dakar on the front and Shinko E805 on the back. The transformation off-road was amazing. The S10 is really a big dirt bike. The Mitas was tough to mount by hand; much tougher than the Shinko. However, the struggle was well worth it. The bike tracked well through sections of deep sugar sand. Of course, I have been riding sugar sand for over 40 years but still never anticipated riding the S10 at the pace that I did today, especially through sandy whoops.
After a few hours of fun, I had my first mechanical failure. The pipe connecting the exhaust to the pipe that runs under the engine came loose from all the bouncing in the whoops. Talk about a loud bike! I rode it home this way because it also began raining.
