Essential mods for a new bike?

I'm not one for mods other than where needed but want to do the essentials. Here's my thinking - be grateful for a steer.

Fender extender: had Pyramid plastic before, same again?

Heated grips: fit Oxford Adventure ones (£60ish) rather than get the dealer to fit the Yam ones?

Spill protection (not going off road so just want to protect against a drop): crash bungs or engine bars? Which for a 2014 model?

Top box: get a rack and fit my existing givi v46 box

Panniers: thinking bumot or givi trekker outback

Things like screen i'll give the benefit of the doubt and see how it goes on its first big trip (Switzerland in Sept).

Cheers
Andy

I cannot open my Yamaha side cases with my Givi V46 fitted, it's too wide. I suspect the same will be true for most top loading side cases.

I'm a great believer in Jesse Bags. I have my 5th set on my ST and as always they perform very well. For the first time I have a Jesse Top Box as well. I used to live in Fairbanks, AK and ran the University dorms. We would have 350-400 riders stay on campus each summer and most were headed to Deadhorse. More than a few had accidents ranging from tip overs to total destruction of the bike. Very often the boxes on the bikes that were rectangular in shape (Touratech, OEM BMW and Yamaha, Explorer, etc) were tweaked from even low speed tip overs. The lids did not fit correctly, were difficult if not impossible to latch and no longer water tight. Never saw a Jesse that would not close correctly and seal after a mishap on the haul road. I saw a bike that had a Jesse Bag ripped completely off and that had to be strapped and taped to the bike, but the case itself was in good shape.

Fender extender: had Pyramid plastic before, same again?-Yep, works well. If you fit a skid plate, it may interfere

Heated grips: fit Oxford Adventure ones (£60ish) rather than get the dealer to fit the Yam ones?-45KM on mine and counting. Cheap effective reliable.

Spill protection (not going off road so just want to protect against a drop): crash bungs or engine bars? Which for a 2014 model?-givi-cheap and hardy

Top box: get a rack and fit my existing givi v46 box-go for it.

Panniers: thinking bumot or givi trekker outback-trekkers will be very expensive. Find some second hand e45, or e35 with givi removable racks

Things like screen i'll give the benefit of the doubt and see how it goes on its first big trip (Switzerland in Sept).

fenda extender - def yes

screen - if you need a taller screen try powerbronze or slipscreens (ebay) both of which are cheaper than the OEM tall screen, slipscreens also do the cockpit side wind deflectors too

luggage - if you ride solo, like me, removing the rear seat and strapping on a big roll bag is enough, together with a tank bag (Givi clip on with fuel cap ring mount)

top box - look ugly and cannot get my leg over (story of my life), basic tail pack does me

crash bars - I thought not, but a very light fall over, onto my leg, pushed the fan enough to catch on the rad and require some bending to get back, so now I intend to get some, PUIG do some cheaper ones that look fairly in offensive

The 2014+ models have the heated grip control integrated into the switch cluster as part of the menu structure, so it may be worth the expense to fit the OEM style.

I can say from experience that the Givi Outback boxes are ace and you can still open them with the V46 on top (though I'll be upgrading to the matching topbox at some point, with the Altrider luggage rack and Monokey adapter set.

The Altrider crash bars are fantastic. I've dropped mine twice already and they've stood up perfectly, just a couple of tiny scratches.

Dunno about screens. Mine came with a weird two-part adjustable Givi thing that I don't like much because a) it's fugly and b) I get a weird low-frequency buffeting that can get unpleasant after a while, if I have it adjusted too high.

As WJBertrand said, you cannot open the OEM side cases with the Givi v46 topbox. However, I particularly like this configuration for both look and functionality. After a period of removing the Givi topbox to open the side cases, it occurred to me (about time!) that whenever I needed something from the OEM side cases, it's much easier to simply remove a side case (with the Givi topbox on the rack). Even more so because my Givi V46 topbox has the Admore lights and to remove the topbox I have to unplug the mini plug from it.

Thanks, that's one thing to consider in any decision.

I got an ebay special which has lasted 3 years with no problem.

Yep, I have Oxford on my Strom and the Mrs TDM - much better than the £360 ones on my Gen1 Yamaha

Went with SW-Motech for exactly the same purpose, happy with the stuff.

Top box: get a rack and fit my existing givi v46 box

Panniers: thinking bumot or givi trekker outback
More SW stuff all the way, I like it and think it is fair value.

Early screen sucked - Givi Airflow is really good, but a little ugly.

Pop over and see me some time if you want to check any of the kit out in the flesh ::008::

For me I had the following upgrades be needed:

replacement joint guard: I was warned about it on the forum and saw someone at a demo day actually drop the bike on their foot.

windshield : stock just didn't do anything for me in all positions but I am a tall guy

the "seat mod" : Need as ergo a position as I can get

engine guards: If I do drop a new bike I would rather mess that up than those expensive plastic pieces

I have optionally installed a RAM X-Grip mount, a brake light flasher and I am currently in the middle of a light bar install with a ton of help from Tabasco (Jaxon).

I just thought i'd chime in and offer another view here. I feel that there's little point in settling for cheap engine bars on your Tenere, it's bound to end in tears and possibly, a serious bout of acute wallet emptying. I had two pairs of GIVI bars fold on me, once after a relatively minor bump with a panel van and again after a walking pace drop, the following year.

The landings both occurred on the left side of the bike and on both occasions the bar sacrificed itself to save the bodywork but in the bump, it failed to protect the fan bracket (which then pushed the fan into the radiator and burned to motor out) and then the radiator itself, in the low speed drop (the bar distorted so much that the 'O' shaped lug twisted the bottom mount of the radiator out of shape, causing it to split).

I now have a pair of Altrider bars on mine but it's your choice at the end of the day and I'm sure folk here will offer opinions on which they feel are the best. The initial outlay on a pair of good quality bars may be higher but you may save lots of money and unnecessary grief in the longer run. ::008::

This is all really helpful - thank you.

I am assuming it is only the OEM grips that you can wire in to the menu? Hadn't realised this was an option. Wiring in the Oxford ones would be a win:win!

Good to get feedback on how bars have performed. No one mentioned the yamaha ones - what are they like?
I am aware the 2014+ has little wind deflectors and i think i read you have to remove these with some bars which i am keen to avoid. Are they ok with the altrider bars?

Panniers is interesting. Definitely want hard ones since i like to be able to lock away valuables.

Big plus for Givi is they are mainstream so less worries about the future, but would go for different sizes to get symmetry. Plus for Bumot is i like them being shaped around the exhaust so they look made for the bike (and Givi had ticked me off by giving such a lame and unhelpful answer to my enquiry that i am reticent to 'reward' them by buying a replacement product from them). Not going to cut my nose off to spite my face though!

The factory heated grips are plug n play on the 2014+, even if the bike initially did not come with the heated grips.

There are a few threads here about using heated grips other than the factory ones on 2014+ bikes, but I don't think anyone has been successful in doing so.

This thread caught my interest for the grips - going to show this to my brother in law and see what he can do. http://www.yamahasupertenere.com/index.php?topic=12822

Have now ordered:

SR371 plate for my existing top box

A set of Bumot panniers (41/45)

Altrider crash bars.

This should get me started. Thanks for all the suggestions - was really helpful in getting a feel for the options.

Strong pound vs euro means good prices at the moment too!

A bit further up, in Carterton - right next door to RAF Brize Norton, an easy 30 minutes from Swindon.
