Im a stone lighter than you so quite similar. I was riding around Wales over the weekend, lots of bends, up, down and you could really get moving on alot of them. I had the damping set on hard + 3. The handling was great for a big trail type bike. I have had it re-flashed though and had the engine breaking reduced alot. It could be the engine braking which adds to the choppy feeling.

So, doing the conversion, ya'll are both under 200lbs. "I" would set the preload at one rider. I am 22 stone, and set the preload to two riders. I can feel the difference between two riders and two riders w/luggage. My rebound/dampening is set at hard for dips, and soft for broken road. With my settings the bike is stable & comfortable regardless of how aggressive I ride. BUT, these are only my experiences and suggestions. Everybody has their preferences. Good luck. ::001::

I am the same weight as you, yet I get along just fine with 'one helmet' solo & the damping on soft 0/+1. Keeps the bike nice & compliant so it can follow the bumps. I wonder if it is the switch to tele forks, after Hossak on the GS, that is confusing the issue? The feel/feedback from the road is very different.

Unlikely on a new bike, but I am assuming that your ES is behaving correctly, when you take it through the various settings. Some riders have got the system confused, by trying to adjust the spring settings with the bike loaded, rather than in line with the Riders Manual instructions.

Enjoy your new ride ........................... KEN

I am 225 and normally ride with Rider + Luggage and Soft -3 with Mitas E07 Dakar tires. I ride a lot of back roads and they can be rough. My 2015 ES handles very well though of course we would like to have them smoother. Just returned from two days of riding in the Sierra and Eastern Sierra with a lightly loaded Tenere. Tools and a computer were the heaviest items. I adjusted to Rider + Passenger and the Tenere rides better than normal. Rode some harsh roads and some smooth roads... Monitor Pass and Sonora Pass are now open and the Tenere was smooth as silk. The roughest-twistiest-hilly road was Pool Station Road and I rode it fast and the Tenere seemed to enjoy it as I did. Pool Station Road is my favorite rough road in the foot of the Sierra that I ride every chance I get. The suspension seems to do well on all surfaces.

Front suspension... I would like to see a fix for what is currently offered. Yamaha... 90% of the Super Tenere riders are not the height and weight of the average Japanese rider! (not to be disrespectful) Most of the American riders (175 lbs+) are using the SOFT minus setting for everyday riding. Logically the suspension would be MEDIUM 0 for everyday riding which allows adjustment for other types of riding.

Rear suspension... Most riders use RIDER + LUGGAGE for everyday riding. This setting should be RIDER only for the average rider. Can't see too many reasons for this setting to be less.

Just my opinion after almost 29,000 ES miles and 52,000 2012 miles.

Thanks everybody ;D one helmet with luggage rest on soft, also dropped tyre pressures by 4,5 psi the bike is probably 70,80% better ,also talking to a guy at the weekend and he said that the bridgestone tyres that it came with have a very hard sidewall which also wont help

??? Uhhh....you gotta be careful playing with air pressure. At least on pavement. The Tenere has two specified pressures for the rear, depending on rider/cargo weight. While the FJR rear tire pressure is the same, regardless of weight. I, personally, would never run a tire pressure low; on pavement. I am going to trust that the manufacturer knows more than I do.

Choppiness maybe from sport settings? I always ride in T mode.
Washboard gravel roads set to soft. Broken down roads set to standard. Twisty smooth roads set to Hard +3.
Single helmet solo. I am around 160lbs. Probably 165lbs with riding gear. The suspension is great for this all around bike.

As far as I know, Sport vs. Touring settings only affect throttle mapping, not suspension settings.

I changed to soft ect the way tomatocity suggested and it seems better. I'm kind of immune to feel a lot of time, but it does feel better. Thanks for suggestions on this.
