I am on board with the EPA on this, I say this as someone who had may fair share of kart and motorcycle track time in.
The future state in which we leave this planet for our children and their children is far more important than entertainment.

I can see it now, a Smog Inspection Station at every "Run What You Brung" weekend fun run. Must pass a $60 Smog Inspection before you can run the track, or have a cert no older than 30 days. That will just push racers back onto the streets. That's a good thing? To me it sounds a bit redundant. If a vehicle is heavily modified for track, it's most likely going to stay on the track. A couple dozen runs a weekend, during the 'season'. Slightly modified will someday have to face the inspector, so it's most likely a very minor modification, easily reversed. So you block off your EGR passageway, so your NOx goes up, it's not millions of vehicles doing this, not even thousands I would bet. It seems like the EPA is just kicking cats for all the political reasons, and not the practical ones. It's like California wanting to Smog Check motorcycles. Somehow it's gotten in their heads that motorcycles are an evil, major source of harmful emissions. Yep, the millions you see jamming up the roads, that's it! You would need thousands upon thousands of race prepped vehicles in a very small area, running all day, every day, to have any sort of regional effect. The one in a thousand truly race prepped Street Rod, Rat Rod, go fast whatever, probably shouldn't be on the road, they're loud, obnoxious, gas guzzlers, but I don't believe they have the impact "they" want everybody to think they have. The volume just isn't there.
I think about emissions something like I think about our water rationing. 'We've got to get cleaner', never mind that we've got three times as many cars on the road with one third the emissions of 40 years ago. 'We've got to use less water!' Never mind the 53% fewer gallons you're using from ten years ago, use 25% less damn it! "They" just need new targets. And a minority gets picked. A plateau gets reached, tech needs to catch up.

I'm with you Don as we are both in Ca.
Smog checks on vehicles are one thing but if my car is 2 years old I don't have to have it checked but I have to pay a smog fee!
And I'm sure that money is going to smog abatement... ???
Nope into the general (party) fund.

I hadn't heard that you still pay the 'fee' with new cars every two years. I had heard that new cars don't get their first smog till something like five years out. Did you hear the Gov wants to tack on another $60 some-odd to each and every registration? We've stopped using so much fuel, and it's cheap right now, that it's impacted the tax income. Lose money here, tax more there.

Not that it is relevant, however diesel engines are having to meet more emissions. Some have forced owner operators out as they cannot afford to meet the new Cali rquirements. That I have a problem with as it is essential transportation. Most states allow you to be grand fathered in.
It is also why diesel engines in cars are common in the EU but not here as our standards are too strict in this regard.

This is all political BS, if they really wanted to save the Planet / America they could just turn off Las Vegas ::008::

We all waste a bit of energy, we all have relatively high Carbon Footprints, but there are far bigger culprits and much easier ways to reduce the damage to the planet.

Not forgetting the real threat is the emerging regions and poor countries where they buy all the polluting trucks we no longer want, or run vehicles 20 or 30 years past when they were buggered.

We keep hearing of "Anti-Tamper" and such like in the EU, it has nothing to do with saving the planet, preventing us from hurting ourselves with an extra 1% power from our new exhaust and everything to do with the law makers justifying their own high paid jobs by dreaming up pointless crap that makes little difference, because making significant changes is actually quite difficult without pissing off their own paymasters.

Another case of the regulatory superstate run amok. EPA has gone so far beyond their original mandate and are now flailing around searching for new ways to justify their existence.

Did you see the proposal about regulating 'emissions' from BBQ grills? --
"The agency has announced granting $15,000 to the University of California to develop technology to reduce particle emissions for residential propane BBQ grills. Of all the things to concentrate on, they are worried about grease from meats getting onto the propane jets that burn clean with very little CO2 to reduce air pollution. They feel it would not only help with “global warming” but also cut down on “health hazards.” While the initial technology will be used primarily in Southern California, they see the “potential for global application.”

Or how about their proposed rule called Definition of Waters of the U.S.? --
"This expansion would bring many roadside ditches, small ponds on family farms, water features on golf courses, and storm water systems under extremely burdensome federal regulation."

These unelected, unaccountable bureaucrats have become out of control. If we leave them to their own devices eventually all commercial and recreational activity will come to a halt. Maybe you think that's a little too reactionary, but the greater power they have to micromanage our lives and businesses, the less freedom and prosperity we will have. I honestly think the core of that agency doesn't give a rat's ass what their mad regulations do to people's lives.

Well at least you can be confident that when the tax revenue from fuel sales goes back up the Gov will stop the $60 fee..... ::025::

We got shafted with that in the UK years ago. The government of the time scrapped the tax disc and put the duty on fuel. A few years later the tax disc returned, although oddly the duty was still left on the fuel, hmmm...
