As noted, that is the traction control kicking in. Somebody else might know, the TCS takes away either spark or fuel. Makes for all sorts of weirdness.
I believe the S10 TCS modulates the throttles, since they're electronic and under computer control. But you can get some pretty strange sounds from the driveline when the TCS kicks as the drivetrain rubber bands and the system alternates cutting power, regaining traction, and then spinning the wheel again.

My takeaway from this thread is there is a lot of worry about various noises, but they're under unusual conditions - whacking the throttle at low RPM, power slides, TCS engagement, etc.. You expect clunky noises in these dark corners of the operating envelope, especially with singles and twins.

I don't think it is the TCS. I have the same sound/vibrations around 3K.
It does not change when switching TCS off and I don't get it in any other rev range when the TCS kicks in.

BUT, when I do the 'clutch switch mod' to eliminate the power limiter in the lower gears, it is gone, TCS on!

Try it and let us know.

Yepp, at least on the European model.
Disconnect the clutch switch plug from the clutch lever and connect the two pins (on the plug) with a wire.
Actually it does the same as removing an ABS sensor, only that ABS and TCS are still working!

Go and ride, the engine light will burn in the cockpit. TCS and ABS are still working!
Power limitations in the lower gears are gone and throttle response will be improved. The vibes and sound around 3k are gone for me then. Much smoother engine.
Try it.

The same I heard from people having the ECU reflashed for removing the power limitations. I wonder that someone reported here that flashing his ECU did not change the vibes!?

US/European differances?

Actually what you are doing by this mod is telling the ECU that the clutch is pulled, still you are riding.

Enough to confuse it ... on your own risk ... you might want your ECU to be reflashed afterwards ;)

:D :D Hand-wringing thread #??..I've lost count. The roads are clear enough to start riding locally where I'm at, so I might take'er out again today.
