Engine has gotten noisier during break-in

So I'm still in the 600 mile break-in period...i rode it around town varying the RPMs, rode it back home keeping the revs under 4k mostly using cruise control. This was miles 100-200. Got home and went out on the twisties keeping it around 4k with about five full throttle run-ups to 7.5k RPM allowing engine braking to slow it back down each time. Cruised around a little bit more and put it away. I took it out today and the engine is quite a bit noisier. Sounds rattly. When I got back home I put it on the side stand to open the garage door with the engine running and the engine sounded a lot different between the bike being upright versus on the side stand. What the heck? Did I mess something up or does it just get noisier as it breaks in? When first brought it home it sounded solid and quieter. I'm really hoping it didn't damage it. I still have about 200 miles till 600 at which point it is going to the dealer for first service. I would do it but I worked the first service into my deal with the dealer. Ugh.

Not that I'm a great tech, but my 14 does the same. I believe when the bike is tilted to the left on the side stand, the clutch basket is also leaning left. Maybe the tilt does something to the fluid. Try pulling the clutch in while in neutral on the side stand. You will hear a difference. At least I do on mine.

I think the noise is still about the same but the strange rattling sounds just get more and more noticeable .

Maybe I'm just not used to the engine but it seemed to be a lot quieter until I pit the coals to it yesterday. Pulling in the clutch does make it a little quieter.

After I get my first service done I'll definitely swing by Belleville for a compare and some riding.

Remind the dealer you ran the crap out of it with under 200 miles. He will probably need to re-synchronize your muffler bearings. ::025::

I wonder if the noise just reflects off of the pavement differently on the side stand vs. the center stand?

I'm sure that will go over well. Probably good note for them to deny the YES warranty later on. "Customer failed to follow prescribed engine break-in".

These are definitely rattly engines. I was with some 4 cylinder bikes last week and it really hit me how smooth and quiet theirs were.

I have to agree on that these engines are not the smoothest ones out there. I'm not sure you guys are familiar with the Honda Varadero but that one has a 1000cc V-twin. Very nice engine without any mechanical sounds. But mine had an issue with the big end of the crank shaft which made it knock a bit. It really bothered me. However, it never became any worse with the increasing mileage so I learned to live with it.
Imagine my disappointment when I rode my brand new 15-S10 home from the dealer with MORE knocking sound than my old bike :'(
I know that the bike is supposed to sound like this but it is a bit annoying...I mean, the engine sound is a bit of a big deal I think. But I have already stopped thinking about it so it's all good now :) ::021::

Most likely side stand to center stand is the way the noise is being reflected. It gets "worse" with a skid plate. I always wear ear plugs except for the one or two block runs, and always amazed at how noisy the bike is.

I wonder if anyone has tried lining the inside of a skid plate with Dynamat?

No pics but I used 1/2" x 1/4" weather stripping and applied it to a clean Alt-Rider skid. The adhesive on most of the products out there is amazing and use the high-density foam to help shed any water trying to collect. The reflected engine noise is much quieter and when offroad, any gravel or rocks that strike the plate is more of a thud than a clang! The skid will have to come off for each oil change or the strips will be damaged by uncollected oil.

With it's foil backing, the Dynamat material might resist oil exposure. I know the stuff works pretty well in high heat areas.

Thanks guys for the reassurance. I may just be chalking up my worries to new bike syndrome where any minute imperfection is the end of the world. It really is a loud engine and makes my Tuono and ZRX sound positively stealthy.

I shall continue to monitor. I am currently back to keeping it mostly below 4k RPM's and modulating the throttle a bit.

I'm at 400 miles on my new S10, the engine is definitely more rattly that my old Strom thou, the gear box rattles a lot with the clutch out but so did my Strom. I'm loving the bike but I'll be glad to get the first service over with! I've been good with keeping the revs under 4k with the occasional blip up to 5k, lots of varying the revs and cooling down periods, nearly done!

I have a '14 with 3k miles on it, I was worried about the noise at first, but now mine is only noisy between 2500 and 3000, after that it sounds much better. Looking at the diagram of the engine, it may just be the decompression parts flying around that are causing the noise. I listened to a few youtube videos and they all seem to rattle. That is my only complaint about the S10 is the engine sound, otherwise I am loving the bike. Great all around ride. ::26::

So no one thinks a couple of runs up to 7.5k RPMs and engine braking to run it back down are bad during early break-in?
