I got my Tenere in the beginning of this year, currently it has a MasterTech engine guard on from previous owner but it doesn't seem like it protect the engine or the fairing very well. I'm looking into T-Rex Racing, Heed and Outback Mototek at the moment. I'm leaning towards Outback Mototek because it's seem from their test it did a good job.
Wondering what do you guys use on your? Is there one you would recommend?

I have the OEM but it needed a top crash bar, which another member showed me where to buy one that worked well in conjunction. It’s made and sold by DS Sports in Spain. The €30 shipping is less than EU sales tax.

ALTrider makes a nice crash bar, but it’s not overly protective of the engine.

YMMV.

Have the Yamaha crash bars from my 2013 installed on my new 2018 ES, if I didn’t already have the Yamaha crash bars I very likely would have bought the ALT Rider crash guards

Hi Kayehle, welcome aboard. One thing that helps with context is to include your location in your profile. This is an international forum, but heavily biased towards North American riders.

On my Gen 1 bike, I had the GIVI guards, and they did well in protecting the fairing.

I saw the Yamaha crash bars and it some what like the one from T-Rex Racing. On their website or eBay you can get a combo of skid plate and crash bar for 500.
How have it serve you? Does it protect the motorcycle well? I love the look of the ALT Rider, but I don't have that kind of disposable income. Lol

I’ve never dropped my bike, or crashed in it so I can’t answer that effectively. I bought my ‘13 lightly used and it came with the criminally overpriced OEM. The guys receipt from the dealer for his extras was nuts. He clearly didn’t shop around.

I also have the full factory hand warmers assembly not installed and he paid $499, with no installation. Yikes.

The top part from DS Bike was about €130 plus the €30 to ship to the USA. It was an affordable alternative.

I too am suffering from sticker shock coming back to riding after an almost 8 years away.

I can’t believe how much they soak you for ADV gear as opposed to sport bikes. I guess they see it as a segment for older/adult riders and price accordingly.

The only prices that seem consistent, as in not having risen exponentially are helmets, lubes, disposables and I’ve done pretty well with used gear and some lower end but quality Olympia jacket/used Olympia pants. The protective gear is much, much better than 8+ years ago so I can forgive that.

Seats that are aftermarket and most protective/performance mods have always cost a pretty penny, but I feel your pain.

Looking at the many options, I would probably be on the hunt for used/ on sale Givi. It might be worth messaging those trying to sell highly built up 2012-2013 that haven’t had tons of luck and see if they might be agreeable to part some of their safety mods out. Winter is coming up North. I live in Western NY and can attest to Autumn like temperatures and a likely brutal, long Winter. Perhaps these folks would like some cash in hand over the riding break and can sell a more stripped version of their S10 next Spring.

Mods can be a big detractors of buying used when the prices aren’t realistic.

Best of luck. Stretch those dollars as far as you can.

Yea, the ALTrider is criminally expensive though... for both upper and lower guard it's around $900.
Edited: have you ever drop your bike? If so how is the OEM handle?
Yep, dropped my Ten three times, last one was when a riding buddy parked too close to me and fell off his bike and fell into me, timbrrrr.
SW Motech crash bars saved the day.
German engineering says it best.

Sw Motech crash bars, you CAN remove both right hand panels upper and lower without removing the crash bars. Left side (fan cover area) you must remove the left crash bar.

Luckily my Tenere has only fallen over once and that was my own fault. Was the second day I owned the 2013, started it in the garage to go on a couple hundred mile ride, drove out the door before remembering to put garage door opener in tank bag, well the ground wasn’t frozen but I thought I could run a couple steps back to push the button to close the door, but nope the ground was to soft so kick stand sunk in the ground and Tenere fell over before I could catch it, the crash bar did exactly what it was designed for, no damage but wow it’s a lot harder to pick up than my Goldwing which weighs a couple hundred more pounds.
The Yamaha bars worked fine but I do believe the Alt Rider bars are a little better, in a serious accident I really wouldn’t want to bet much money on any of them.

I wondered if I was just getting too old. The one and only time I picked up the Super Tenere was after I hit a car at about 40mph. The stock bars worked fine to protect the engine and fairing, but of course the front wheel and forks were bent into the engine. It was all I could do to pick up the bike off the ground. I guess I was lucky enough to be able to pick it up at all I suppose, but I was really disapointed in my strength that day. Riding only on the street and the once in a blue moon dirt road, the stock system works fine for me.

I have mastech bars on my 16 model. Took them off my 12 model. Both bikes have been on the ground on several occasions. Dropped a couple times in the yard and on payment. Off road they have been on the ground 4 times. Moving mishaps. These bars have done a great job keeping everything put and out of harm's way. Engine, fairings, top box or bag. Pull them off repair , repaint, reinstall. Skid plate is t rex and it does fine as well. Didn't fit the best tho.

Mastech is what the bike currently have, both engine guard and luggage rack from the previous owner. It doesn't cover much of the fairing or engine that's why I'm kind of worry.

Why didn't it fit best if you don't mind me ask? The crash bars does make the bike ended up look like a tank though lol

I'm glad you able to walk away from that accident. No, you're not too old :) it's a heavy motorcycle, I think it only lose to the 1200 GSA (heavier than a reg 1200 GS).

I like black AltRider crash bars on my Red and Black '15.
I am planning to add an upper part for the next season.

Since they mount to the factory hard point....and they stick out further than the body....and they will hit the ground first....they just have to be strong. I also forgot to mention that the battery side panel can be removed without removing the bars.

I have alt lowers and skid plate and my opinion they are too expensive, over kill and add weight. I ask yourself do you really do offroading? and if so is just fire and graded gravel roads? Thats good starting point of how much protection you need and of course your wallet 8). The standard plastic engine and hand guards take most of the blow in a trip over or slow skid. The same for the oil guard.
