How might a guy break in his motor on a fly and ride from Longview Texas back to Washington State? I'd just as soon not keep the motor at a prolonged speed/rpm. I'm not sure I've got enough time to spend an extra day around the dealer, put 500 miles on and then head back to Washington. Maybe hit some back roads then look for another dealer along the way? Suggestions?

Pete
I just went through this exact thing - only I did a ride and ride. ;) Rode the V-Strom to Longview overnight from Chicago on Wednesday, pulled in Thursday morning, traded it in, and rode home on the S10. I took every single freeway exit/onramp on the way back to Maryland until reaching the 600 mile mark. I also rolled on/off the throttle while on the highway to keep the rpm moving aorund between exits. It helps to do this in times of light traffic! I did manage to find a couple dirt roads to play on with 36 miles on the clock - after 50 or so miles of that, got back on the road again.

Found an excellent dealer in Fayetteville Tennessee - great service, quick, and fair. I'll post more about them tomorrow when I can find the paperwork.

This bike is easily the smoothest I have ever had the pleasure of owning. Transmission, suspension, brakes, all great, and then the motor - that is exceptional!!

i picked up my bike in longview, tx last weekend. it was 110+ degrees and i was ready to get out of the heat bubble. so hit the highway... mostly interstate the first 300 miles. kept the revs at or below 3900 rpm, passed some cars doing a lot more than 3900, looked down at the speedo and was impressed. i dig the roll on power/speed of the tenere. the last 200 miles was mostly back roads through a much cooler tennessee and home.

as far as break-in... i don't baby it, but i don't ride it like i stole it either. if i had a longer than 600-800 mile ride home, i'd find a dealer along the way.

Just wanted to throw this in the "break in".... Changed my first oil at 250 mi.. The engine oil looked pretty good.. The rear end oil was super black and nasty... And had all the normal metal metallic in the oil... Also the magnet in the rear end housings had a good amount of 'goo' on it.... Any of you that are changing your own, make sure to change the rear aswell.... ;)

Hey Guys,

I just got the new blue beast on Friday. It's now Sunday and has 525 glorious miles on her from riding around the Interior of Alaska. It was between 52 and 80F during these rides and I can't say I did a lot of raggin on it, but a few very easy 120MPH passes...I think all the drivers could have seen is a blue streak flashing off to their left...only when it was {coughs} safe to do so. It will easily lift the front tire off the ground in Sport and 1st or 2nd gear. Anyway, it's now ready for it's first oil change tomorrow.

its your money guys but there's no point changing the oil too soon unless you just got a lot of time on your hands and spare cash, also again its your money but putting synth in it too soon will make it worse rather than better in the long run, ask any of the guys on the strom forum who put full synth in their stroms at 500 miles how much oil they use today 6000 miles further down the road?

again its your money spend it how you want to ;)

I put synth in my Strom starting very early on. When I sold it at 65,000 miles, it had never used any oil. It just used chains and clutch baskets and water pump seals.
