Hi everyone,
Thinking of upgrading my 2011 S10Z to a 2017 ZE with the electronic suspension. Is there a noticeable improvement with this. I am generally quite happy with my manual suspension and handling so would just like people’s opinions on whether the electronic set up helps. Other than that I like the idea of cruise control but can get this on Gen 2 Z models.

Yes, its a very nice upgrade... Ive ridden all flavors many-many times.......................... There is a huge "But"..

It 100% depends on what YOUR expectations are..... How you ride, where you ride, what you're actually wanting / looking for.... For some people, this conversation is very simple, they are a 'normal' average person................ other people are looking for VERY specific aspects that the stock ES might, or might not provide.........

Here is only one example, I have known several people that like to off road their bike, the stock ES is TOO SOFT even in the hard setting.... they thought the ES would provide them "all" the range they need.............. Not true..... they had to go back and change the springs, oil weight and volume to help take care of this situation....... With this work done, Ive had conversations with them now after this work and they claim the lower settings now on the ES are NOT the same (obviously).... They now DONT have that wide window of adjustment they did as when the bike was stock)............. SO, very difficult to "have it all"........

Depending on what you want.......... It might be the right choice.............. OR NOT.... ?????? Maybe only you can decide that choice. I suggest test riding a ES..... renting one for the day....... or borrowing a friends ES, so you can really see if it's the change you think it might be for you..............

The folks off the internet will probably tell you it's GREAT............. do they ride like you? Do they ride where you ride? Do they do the same thing as you ? Take this into consideration.......

The Yamaha ES suspension is pretty good considering....... It's not perfect for all situations or all riders.........

Of course...... this is IMOP -

I really like the ability to change settings off the handlebar and I think the suspension is a highlight of this bike ('21 ES). After much experimentation I'm basically down to 3 settings...Standard+3 general riding, soft 0 for gravel/ shitty roads and hard 0 for twisty tarmac/ spirited riding. Never ridden a non-ES so can't compare with that. As Tabasco says it's quite a 'softly' suspended bike so if you're a bigger guy or carry lots of stuff it may seem a bit under-sprung.

I weigh 230 lbs geared up and found my 2021 ES way too soft even with it set to two people with luggage. Plus, it was a PITA to place on the center stand due to the excessive rear sag. I installed a set of shorter Lust Racing rear links that raised the rear 20mm……simply magic with the correct sag, suspension set at rider only, and steers much quicker than it did. It feels much better now.

And I'll be the odd man out. "I" think the E-suspension if fine/great. We have two types of roads; smooth and shitty. I have the bike set for shitty, 'cuz if the setting works on crap, it'll be fine for smooth. It is also very convenient when switching from solo to two-up. And then there's the being able to adjust rebound/dampening on the fly.

For what it's worth, I'm 300+lbs and am a pavement princess. Never been on anything more challenging than a packed dirt road.

Thanks for the reply. The non ES have great suspension with lots of adjustment and easily carry passengers and luggage, which I do occasionally. I think the best thing is to try and find one to test ride.
