I had a 2010 GS with ESA and it had nice little pictures so knuckleheads like me could figure it out. Off road was a mountain. Harder off road was a bigger mountain. When I would get to the forest serviice roads I would adjust it to the small mountain and the bike would raise up about an inch. I don't think it was pre load as that was a different adjustment. So my question is what caused this and will the ES do the same thing?

I'll let the experts chime in on this to be certain but I think it's preload whenever the bike raises or lowers.

That would seem to be correct but different bikes have different suspension travel and it is not dependent on the pre load.

I have a 2014 ES and when I go to a softer setting, the bike tends to raise and does make it quite nice during off road riding. I think that might answer part of your question. Hard seems to squat a little lower like it changes the shock travel.
