I don't how UPS routes their packages, but years ago *ALL* Fed-Ex packages went through, IIRC, Memphis, Tennessee. Literally every single one. Fed-Ex would toss every package from wherever it came from on a plane, fly it to Memphis, sort where each package was going, and then it'd go on a plane to get routed to where it was going. I saw a documentary once where it showed that all packages had to hit that Memphis hub within a two-hour window to get sorted and shipped out. It was pretty friggin' impressive.
I know now that Fed-Ex has multiple hubs, like Indianapolis and Alliance near Ft. Worth, and I'm sure UPS does, too. For me, to this day I am still wonderfully amazed that I can be sitting here in South Texas, go and drop a package off at a UPS or Fed-Ex facility, and it can be literally in Bumf*ck, Wherever the very next morning if I so desire... And all for what amounts to an extremely fair cost. I can remember back when I mailed a package and it took literally weeks just to cross the USA. And now Fed-Ex even has "Same Day" delivery in some areas... ???
On another note, I have had one package delayed lately due to the storm issues around Oklahoma... Doubt that's pertinent in the cases above, but just FYI.
