I had been looking for my first bike, a 2000 Honda Nighthawk 750. I wanted something lighter, air cooled, and easier to push out of the garage for my short commute (~6mi). I found a lot of ragged out trash on Craigslist, and then my friend reminded me of a couple comments I had made.

1. After my first FI bike (2nd gen Hayabusa), I never want a carburetor again.
2. After my first ABS bike (S10), I never want a bike without ABS again.

I had considered the FZ09, but it never spoke to me in the shop. Same with the F800GS. Then Ducati checked all the boxes plus Italian sexy.

I put my money down for April delivery. It's not replacing the S10. It's just a short distance bike. I don't think it will detract from the S10. It's a different machine.

I hope it's great.

Congrats. Definitely an impressive bike that I could easily find in my garage.....except, I just bought a new Moto Guzzi V7 Racer. Pick it up next Wednesday when I get off shift. ::008:: ::008::

One of my work colleagues has just returned from the UK bikeshow at Birmingham NEC. He's a big Ducati fan and was straight across to check out the Duke stand. Apparently the scramblers on show didn't look that good on close inspection but he seems to think these are pre-production show mules that were thrown together in time for the bikshow circuit. Hopefully...

I was never a fan of the Monster but saw these last month and they look great! It'd be a hard pick for me between the Icon and Urban Enduro.

looks good, mind you that front cylinder will get an absolute shit kicking of dirt and muck...

I'm playing it safe and cheap :), new FZ-07 showing up min January.
Had the FZ-09 and quite liked it. Didn't bother me that it didn't have ABS.

But I agree with you wholehartedly about carb'd bikes...PITA IMO

I don't seriously expect to do much if any offroading with it. Hopefully someone will create a light weight skid plate solution to deflect rocks. It'd be cool to hit a fire road or two, but this is mainly for around town running.

no I mean regular road junk. Up here they gravel the roads, so early in the season, it's basically a free sandblasting session.
Even with my fender extender installed, the fz09 was getting it pretty good. I do think that thing would be a riot on some smooth gravel

Who do you work for in the oilfields up there? I was at Elk Hills yesterday working on a submersible pump. Always funny how small the world feels now and then.

Check out the maintence cost. If what I've heard is correct, it's a deal breaker for me.
According to BIKE magazine they have 7,500 mile service intervals, so not too bad length wise but it will no doubt be expensive. Ducati's have never been particularly easy on the pocket. Very easy on the eye though !

CRC formerly Oxy Vintage. I used to be a drilling engineer for Elk Hills. I switch business units a couple times since then.

Going to a Ducati dealer for ALL service has never been cheap, but the flip side is that almost everything on the bike is easy to get to and owners can do most to all service. Even adjusting the valve belts is very easy to learn to do and the interval for those is 18,000 miles.

The thing that would be the biggest deterrent to my buying one is simply that it is a pretty small bike.

I'm only 5'9", and the S10 is actually a bit of a stretch for me. So it should be a little better for me.

The nice thing is I can back out and have my $500 any time. So there was really nothing to lose by preordering.

Put a deposit on a yellow one today...delivery expected in April. I'm 5' 10" S10 feels fine for me but I want a "little" toy to play with.

So...I backed out of the Scrambler. I got these instead.

Whoops...

I went to ride the Aprilia vs. a Hypermotard, and the Moto Guzzi caught my eye (and my woman's). They were both 2014 holdovers and they made me such a good deal on the pair I couldn't pass it up.
